Cop never shows up unless you request it.
Go challenge it and negotiate with the prosecutor, but don't tell her the excuse you told us or she will tell you to not waste her time.
Admit guilty and negotiate, usually they knock it down to like $110 and no points, maybe less money if you kiss ***.

The judge won't ask for an explanation. He'll just see that the cop isn't there and dismiss the charges.
A guy at my work went to the court house a few weeks ago to do the same thing. His cop never showed up so he plead not guilty and got off with nothing. (not even having to explain)
Unfortunately his dumbass friend plead guilty even though the cop wasn't there. The judge said "are you SURE you want to do this" .. he said "yup, guilty, but with an explanation" ... the judge didn't want to hear it. They said it wasn't up to them to decide the terms of the punishment, they were just there to hear the case and since he said he was guilty he had to pay the fine and get knocked for the points. Any negotiations for the fine or points had to be done with the DMV.
