Sygate for firewall. It's free for personal use. AVG and Trendmicro online are decent and free too. Use Firefox as an IE alternative for minimal spyware and improved performance.

With the amount of open source software available there is no need to pay for most software (games excluded)

sygate when i don't have a router

i prefer a router, doesn't use your system resources.

Well, thanks for all the advice guys. I am in the process of dl'ing AVG and am now using Xp's firewall. Seems to be working alright so far. Why on earth did I ever spend money on virus software in the past? [img]graemlins/banghead.gif[/img]

x100000 it has saved me countless times from viruses.and its FREE.

I only use Xp firewall and Mcafee Enterprise 7.0 no issues at all....

Yeah paying for anti-virus doesn't seem worth it at this point. Maybe in a few years.

btw. XP's firewall is very basic. I would get something like Zone Alarm or Sygate instead of using XP's firewall. It's just really basic and well I wouldn't trust it.
