Some points to ponder:
The Olympics took place in Olympia (Greece), thus the name.
In ancient times, athletes were athletes only -- not bakers or farmers... so in a way it was their job and they were professional.
The advent of the modern Olympics brought about the idea of Amateurs (from the French word meaning of the heart).
When the Olympics were re-created, the original competitors were usually gentlemen with lots of personal income who could afford to train as oppossed to working -- the Olympics were for the rich.
In closing, the original spirit of the Olympics was to display the best of humanity, striving to acheve the best they could do -- not the okay people doing the kind of best.

The Olympics are supposed to showcase the pinnacles of human athleticism. Who cares if they're in a league or not, that's their JOB.

So you're saying that someone who isn't good enough to play basketball for a living should be given the chance?
Why not just send me. Hell, I don't train at all for any sports. So I deserve even more of a shot!!
Send your best, lets see what country really has the best atheletes in the sport.
Would you really be happy knowing you beat a team full of a countries most mediocre players?
OH... btw, I went to college to be a LAN admin. But clearly it's not fair that I get to work on computers all day.
Do any auto mechanics or basket makers want to come in and try and run my network? It's only fair, right?? </font>
Dude i agree send your best but they shouldn't automatically assume that their best is someone that gets paid to play the sport for a living. You totally missed what i was gettin at so nm

(and bringing spl comps in to this is dumb so please don't.. I don't feel like getting a cramp from writing a reply THAT long... but as a quick reply. In dbDrag all competitors compete against each other. The "no sponsors for street" class rule was taken out this year.. so your point is useless)
Ok so now I see. Olympics is about sending your best athletes. Paid or not paid. And another question: How much does the goverment pay the olyimpic athletes? The two olympic athletes I know had to have paying jobs to live. (both x-country skiers)

It depends on the sport. In Canada we don't support our athletes like other countries. Many of the "traditional" sports don't have much in the way of professional leagues or much in the way of endorsements. Many have full time jobs, Home Depot is proud that they have more Olympic athletes employed there than any other company. As for winning medals, many countries will pay their atheltes when they win a Gold, up to millions of dollars, Canada does not. Until Canada gets with the program for funding Olympic athletes we will never match other countries for medal count.

I thought you were asking a rhetorical question.
Now, to answer your other question. Olympic athletes are given grants. I'm not sure if it comes in the form of bi-weekly pay cheques or if they come as a lump sum.
They DO get paid though.
