It is not advisable to mix synthetic and convention, as you obviously lose the benefits of a full synthetic.
All oils synthetic or otherwise ARE petroleum based. Including Royal Purple and Amsoil.
A simple definition of what makes an oil a synthetic is when the base oil is synthesized to the desired molecular structure and then blended with additives. Typically synthetics contain less additives, as the additives break down with time and use, necessitating oil changing. Thus conventional oils usually have shorter oil change intervals than some synthetics.
As for the oil leaking thing, check out Royal Purple's website. It is possible that changing to a synthetic to cause oil leaks.
In my personal experience I have never come across it.
Do some more research on your own, and draw your own conclusions.

What stores or what placs offer oil changes with say royal purple or amsoil? I am about to get my car back on the road and after 7 months of none use I am thinking it should get a fresh oil change and I figured I'd try out the syntec stuff just to see if I notice anything... the car has 40,000km on it so it's well passed it's break in period...I checked crappy tire but see nothing there.. and How bad would a quick lube place try and bend me over?

Wal-Mart's own brand! Around $20 for a 4L jug. They also sell other brands, like Mobil and Castrol and whatnot, but they're more like $25/4L.

My van had well over 100,000 when I started given'er synthetic. Still doesn't leak or burn any oil, at 410,000 km's.

if its good enough to come in brand new vettes and good enough for f#1 engines, its good enough for the neon. i use mobile1 in my neon and used amsoil in all my motorcycles(better at 15000rpm than mibile1) i use royal purple in my wifes protege5 and would never put regular oil in any of my rodes except for my 86 bronco cuz i really dont care that much about her, i just like running over things with it
as for mixing synthetic with traditional oil, i wouldn't but i have no reason for that just that i wouldnt, although i didnt read every response in this thread and someone may have already said it, alot of synthetic oil arent synthetic, castrol syntec comes to mind, its not 100% synthetic

I am absolutely certain on this matter. It is derived from petroleum base.
"Synthetic base stocks" are derived from petroleum. Not sure how many times I can say the same thing.
