synthetic is made in a lab for engines only,
whereas regular motor oil is dug up then added in with detergents, anti-oxygents, stablizers and such

now both will do the same job... it's just up to you

The other long running myth of it hurting your engine to run syn. on older engines is total bull, as is the syn. oil making engine seals leak...

This confusion stems from not knowing exactly what synthetic motor oil is, and how it is different from castrol syntec, or mobil's counterpart. Castrol Syntec, or mobile1's synthetic oil, aren't true synthetics regarless what any sales person tells you. How these oils differ from conventional oil is that the sulfer is removed from the oils, thus the buildup of sulfuric acide isn't an issue, therefore it's better for your engine, aside from being a cleaner oil.

To get true synthetic oil, as most people thing they are getting with syntec (which is petroleum based... therefore NOT synthetoc) you need to go to Royal purple, or Amsoil etc... These oils are truly 100% synthetic, where syntec, or mobile1's 'Synthetic' Oil is not...

I have been running Syntec in all of my engines since it hit the shelves and love the differences it makes, but the choice is yours... 10 bucks for a gallon of liquid gold, or 35 for a gallon of syntec ,you make the choice, just make sure you are making it for the right reasons...

I agree with the intent of Mark's post, that being sythetics are good. However:

It is not advisable to mix synthetic and convention, as you obviously lose the benefits of a full synthetic.

All oils synthetic or otherwise ARE petroleum based. Including Royal Purple and Amsoil.

A simple definition of what makes an oil a synthetic is when the base oil is synthesized to the desired molecular structure and then blended with additives. Typically synthetics contain less additives, as the additives break down with time and use, necessitating oil changing. Thus conventional oils usually have shorter oil change intervals than some synthetics.

As for the oil leaking thing, check out Royal Purple's website. It is possible that changing to a synthetic to cause oil leaks.

In my personal experience I have never come across it.

Do some more research on your own, and draw your own conclusions.
Good Luck!

I only mentioned it, if someone wanted to top up there oil with synthetic, not to actually mix half and half when you change your oil...

Not according to amsoil... and there is a difference between synthetic blend, and synthetic, you are talking about Amsoil's synthetic blend...

What are AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils?
AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants are fuel efficient, extended life lubricants manufactured from select synthetic base stocks and special purpose additives. These lubricants provide improved overall performance characteristics when compared to conventional petroleum oils.
What are AMSOIL Synthetic Blend Motor Oils?
AMSOIL Synthetic Blend Motor Oils are a blend of synthetic fluids and petroleum oils. They are combined to form an all season motor oil that demonstrates many of the performance features of synthetic lubricants.

What stores or what placs offer oil changes with say royal purple or amsoil? I am about to get my car back on the road and after 7 months of none use I am thinking it should get a fresh oil change and I figured I'd try out the syntec stuff just to see if I notice anything... the car has 40,000km on it so it's well passed it's break in period...I checked crappy tire but see nothing there.. and How bad would a quick lube place try and bend me over?

You should be able to find Castrol Syntec at Cand. Tire quite easily.

Wal-Mart's own brand! Around $20 for a 4L jug. They also sell other brands, like Mobil and Castrol and whatnot, but they're more like $25/4L.

Tech 2000 Synthetic is what it's called. Grey jugs.

410,000 hard city kliks can't be wrong!

My van had well over 100,000 when I started given'er synthetic. Still doesn't leak or burn any oil, at 410,000 km's.

The synthetic stock is derived from petroleum. It is synthesized to whatever amsoil deems optimal. I am sure on this.

A lot of this information people are presenting are direct from the dealer or manufacturer.

Just like everything else, take it with a grain of salt!

My information on how the synthetic oil was made was given from an Engineer that works for Amsoil, got it one day at the SanAir Drag strip...

My information is first hand from working experience as a race car engineer working with:
1) lubricant engineers at Petro Canada in Mississauga.
2) Authors of race car engineering texts.
3) Other race car engineers in F3000.

You quoted direct from Amsoil's website.

I am absolutely certain on this matter. It is derived from petroleum base.

"Synthetic base stocks" are derived from petroleum. Not sure how many times I can say the same thing.
