around downtown Medicine Hat. I went for a walk downtown tonight with the camera and snapped a few pics.
This first one is St. Joseph's Church. I guess it burnt down or something and was rebuilt early on in Medicine Hat's history. It is pretty nice, for a church (I guess I prefer bar's, lol)
This is a shot of the back of City Hall. It has a real nice view overlooking the South Sask. River. It is one of the more modern looking buildings in the Hat.
Believe it or not this mural is on the side of a liquor store. It is right beside the Royal Hotel, the only good place3 to hear a bunch of crappy bands playing songs like "Boys in the Bright White Sports Car" wednesday through saturday. I especially like it has some nice history behind Medicine Hat. For those who don't know, a long time ago Medicine Hat was thinking of changing it's name to something not so wacky. Well Rudyard Kipling who was a visitor here once or twice got wind and wrote this. If you don't know who Rudyard Kipling is shame on you.
This is a local knick knack, souvineer type shop. I have never been there, nor am I planning on going in. Why did I take this picture? Because it has the same name as one of my favorite movies. Max Von Sydow plays the devil in it. Early in Max's career he played Jesus in "The Greatest Story Ever Told". Coincedence?
This picture is looking down a railing from the new courthouse to the City Hall. You can see Findlay Bridge in the background there. It used to pivot at one time to allow boats to pass on the South Sask. Also if there was a battle or something they could put the women and children on it, pivot it and they would be safe . Don't know how that would keep them safe as the controls had to be on shore and anyone with a decent rifle should be able to pick a target off from that range.
Well that's it for now.

Nice pictures Dereck!
I've been to the Hat, and I have never really taken time to learn any local history or take in a few local sights. (I always seem to be working!)
Anyway, thanks for the tour. I think you've got a knack with the camera too.

"Medicine Hat receives an average of 2,433 hours of sunshine per year, which makes it the sunniest city in all of Canada. The average temperature during July is 23 Celsius (73.4 Fahrenheit); during January is -12.6 Celsius (9.3 Fahrenheit). Mean rainfall is only 230 mm (8.7 inches) per year"
This is the part I really like about living here.
