setting up vpn through dlink router

Hey Folks

Dlink DI-524 router
Dell XPS 1710 notebook

So my new PC came in yesterday...it's flippin intense. Anywho, now that i don't have a stupid usb wireless, i'd like to install the VPN client for my company on my computer (already done).

I don't get any blue screens as I did previously, but my router prevents me from fully connecting to the vpn. I'm sure i need to open some ports for the VPN to work through, but i'm not 100% sure what i'm doing - never hda to do any of this jazz on a router - technically a newbie.

Reading the internet, i'm at an understanding that hopefully I can open ports 50 and 51 and port udp 500. Then i'll hopefully be able to connect. Does anyone agree with this or is there an easier way? I've also read something about turning on IP port 1723 for TTPT connection.

I don't know if these are correct nor do we support people for configuring their home systems to connect to VPN. Likewise, i'm not 100% supposed to have VPN on my computer as it's not technically a company computer (but we sorta do it anyways - just hush hush). So, I can't openly/legitimately ask our network guy what our VPN requires as far as ports to be opened or similar. But if i'm on call, and vpn into the network, then RDP into my computer to reset a password for someone if required....I'm all over that!!! to me for being as lazy as possible (and saving time n money for myself and the end user)

Hmmm well if anyone cares I may have figured it out. I did the following steps:

1. Open Internet Explorer and type in 192.168.0.1
2. Log into the router
3. Click on the Advanced tab.
4. Under the Virtual Services List, goto IPSec and choose to edit it.
5. Update the Private IP field to your computer's IP. Then change the radio button above to enabled.
6. Hit the Apply button.
7. Create New item
8. Choose a name to label it
9. Put your pc's IP in the Private IP field.
10. Protocol Type should be set to both.
11. In both the Private Port and Public Port fields, type in the number 9550.
12. Make sure Schedule is set to Always, it should be by default.
13. Hit the Apply button.
14. Now click the Tools tab, once you are on the Tools home page, click the Misc. button.
15. Under VPN Pass.THrough, set IPSec from enabled to disabled and hit the apply button.

That failed for me, but reading some documentation our network admin sent me a while ago, I realize we use UDP 10001 not 9550. So tonight, i'll test that out and with any luck it'll finally work and i'll never have to come to work again!!! Well i will, but i'll be able to update or check stuff from home if need be.
