As most of you know I picked up a 2002 Explorer a few months back. Well, the other day I was driving down the road and I noticed something rather strange. Every so often I get a high pitched whistling noise. It seems to do it when I accelerate. Once it starts if I increase the gas sometimes it gets louder and sometimes it fades away.

I thought maybe it was coming through the speakers or something however when I noticed it last I turned the radio off and it was still doing it. I also turned the blowers off thinking that might be the culprit yet it still does it with those off as well.

So far it has only done it when it's extremely cold outside. For the last week we've been in the deep negative's for windchill and temp. And so far it's only seemed to do it to me when it's rather cold.

I've never had alternator whine so I don't know what it sounds like. Otherwise I may be able to tell if that is what it was. I'm wondering if it's just something with the truck because it's cold out, or if it's something with my system making it whine like that...

I have two twelve inch Kicker Comp VR's running off of a Rockford 800aII. This is all hooked up to the factory deck through one of those pieces that connect via your speaker wires and allow you to go through the factory deck.

This whole thing isn't really a big deal as it doesn't do it really all that often. it's just more of an annoyance not knowing what it is.

My guess would be the alternator, I've heard other cars make noises as such when its cold out, its almost like its struggling but not quite.

It could also be a cross wind entering into your air vent eventhough your blower even though it is off. Could also be a belt. Happened all the time when i had my jetta. It's the blow off valve from your turbo.

My Cavy does the same sort of thing...I've narrowed it down to it being a suction noise through my cowl induction since the air is a little more dense....But its just a theroy at this point..

Is it your speedometer?

A few weeks back in Toronto when it was lik e-35 my speedometer 'popped' and did the same thing any time I went over 30 kph.

It would bounce all over and whine like crazy.

I figured I had snapped the wire.

It warmed back up, and the speedo went back to normal.

It has been cold this week (-25 or so last night), and it hasnt done this again.

I didnt know if it was some water/moisture in the speedo gears or what, but when I quizzed my mechanic on it he said if it needs to be fixed it is easy, and its fairly common.

Could be your issue too.

With Alt Whine, generally if you turn the stereo's power off it stops.

My grand am does it too... still havent figured it out yet...but it doesnt do it much anymore.. every now and again..
and i know for a fact its not the alternator cuz i like JUST replaced that and asked my mechanic if it was...

Could be your power steering. On really cold nights when I fire up my car in the morning I can hear it whining, which is perfectly normal since the fluid thickens up in the cold weather. Once the engine warms up it goes away.

im not sure how it actually sounds but my boss' ball joints were gone and they intermidently high pitch squeeked off and on until they went totaly bad and didnt relly stop.

Sounds like pressure equalizing, possibly from the vacuum operated heater controls, A/C. If the noise stops when your vehicle does, and start only at certain speeds, it could be something becoming a whistle, like a slightly open window, or something like that.
