Although it's usually more shiney than dirty it is a very capable trail rig and other than pulling stumps will outwheel a similarly equipped fullsize domestic.
Good little truck to work with Xiphoid. With little modifications it will be a very capable and reliable pickup.
I would recommend an electric fan swap if it hasn't already been performed.

Front and Rear Bumper.
Belt Driven Air compressor and Welder.
Electric Fan.
I've done all of hem in other vehicals except for the welder, which is just a frankenstein alternator.
I'm liking the folks of the Toyota community, very friendly and helpful.

when it comes to capable off road machines toy's rule well the 84-88 ones do anyways, especially the 84/85 solid front axle ones, I don't know anything about the newer ones they may rule too
my dad has 2 toys right now an 85 reg cab with a 2LT turbo diesel (it's hard enough finding a diesel one, little lone a solid axle one) ....he's got a 3" lift on it right but he's running 235's untill he gets the coin to swap to 4.88's and 31x10.50's (the diesel is pretty gutless so he needs a bit lower gears for the heavy tires)
and he has an 87 sr5 4runner with a 22re, it's completly stock other than the 31x10.50's </font>
Generally the pre86's which have the front solid axle are the best for offroad, or even the SAS conversion.
As far as daily/mudder I'd prefer a ISF.
A friend of ours has a Turbo V6 4 runner with 9" of lift and 36" iroks solid axles front and rear.
That thing goes....
