Motor related questions........mechanics, tuners, anyone knowledgable

I wouldn't go for anything other than another D series motor. If you go with a B series engine, you will have to get new mounts (400 -500 bucks). Not to mention ECU, harness adapters, etc. Not worth the headache. You can go with a non VTec D series motor. The trannys on all D series motors are interchangeable. The newer Civics are hydro trannys, so you may be better off keeping yours if it is in good shape. There are lots of stock D motors out there, since every Tom, Dick, and Harry wants to place a B series motor into their Civic/CRX. After going with a JDM ZC motor with nitrous and blowing doors off of unsuspecting V8's, I've toned it down a bit and have gone back to the stock set up with a supercharger for a wee bit of fun. Nothing like keeping it stock for reliability and driveability.
BTW, don't let anyone convince you to sell the CRX. They're so nice. Actually, judging by how nice you keep your CRX is, I think you're like me and my 4th gen hatch.
Anyway, in the long run, a motor that was meant to be in your car would be the best choice. If anything, you may want to get the 1.6 Si motor that will be a direct fit. Everything is the same except for maybe the ECU because of multi-point fuel injection (optional). D16A6 is the motor I am talking about (the Si motor). I've seen them go for $100.00 - $200.00. There are places that rebuild engines, too.
If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask. Believe me, everything and anything that can be done to the 4th gen Civic/CRX, I have done at one point or another. I've had my 89 hatch since I bought it new, back in the winter of 88.

5th generation Civics (no more CRX by this generation) had the D16Z6 motor (125 HP) in the Si models, and the D15XX (3 versions) motors on the lower models (from 70 to 103 HP)
6th and 7th Civics came with B series motors(160 to 180 HP) in the SiR models and D16Y7 and Y8 motors (125ish HP). There are a lot of other models and configurations, but......... I don't know why I'm doing this.......... I have too much time on my hands.
I should be working on the stereo system in my car.
