lookin for info regarding illegal parking near fire hydrants (in alberta)
Hey Folk,
I'm just curious about some info. I got a parking ticket for "parking too close to a fire hydrant" today. I may be in the right may be in the wrong, probably just lack a bit of knowledge of the exact rules.
I was parking on the street. Between the curb and the sidewalk is about 3ft of grass. Between the sidewalk and the fire hydrant, probably 6-8ft of grass. Then if you drew a line from the fire hydrant towards the road, the rear of my vehicle may have been 4-6ft in front of it.
Basically the hydrant is further away from the curb than what you normally see. Because the curb wasn't painted yellow or any color at all, I assumed that it wasn't an issue. I'm guessing i'm mistaken....but just wondering about the specifics?
Do they not always paint hte curbs? What is the minimum distance allowed between a fire hydrant and vehicle? if the fire hydrant is 12-15 ft from the curb, do they measure from the fire hydrant to the vehicle, or from where the firehydrant would be if they moved it in a straight line to the road.....to the beack of the vehicle.
I'm not worried about paying the ticket...so don't worry about those lectures, just curious on the specifics as the ticket seems vague. I've parked too close to a stop sign and got a ticket for being within 6 meters of the stop sign...but this one just says too close to hydrant.

I got myself a ticket for parking within 3m of a hydrant a few weeks ago... which I am fighting...
couldn't see the hydrant from the drivers seat while parked next to it, and there are no signs indicating that you can't park there.. in fact the signs that are posted indicate that you can park there... WTF !!
I plan to plead guilty with an explination, and intend to lie to the judge about how much money I make/have... I suggest you do the same....
The 2hr away from work will cost more then the ticket, but it's the principal I have with my city's BS cash grab.... f' that...

on a second look of the ticket it does say 2.8M in brackets. If 5 M is 15 feet, I probably wasn't fit ft in front or back of the fire hydrant, but a total distance of over 15 feet away (counting accross the sidewalk and related.

From ByLaw 5590
Unless a traffic control device permits or requires, a vehicle shall not be parked within 5 metres of a fire hydrant or, when the hydrant is not located at the curb, within 5 metres from the point on the curb nearest the fire hydrant.
