k&n filter vs any regular filter....

Apparenlty my jeep needs a new filter...air filter i mean....so i dunno. Is there any point to paying $80 for a k&n air filter, or will pretty well any air filter off the shelf work (i know there's another big brand name one, but i can't think of it)
The jeep isn't exactly the high performance machine that my car was (or so i thought). So really am i wasting money going k&n? i see it was about double the price of the other dudes.
It's just a regular 4L engine and will get a panel filter.

I myself have never bought a K&N or any similar filter for better mileage or performance, since the gains you get in both are neglegable
but I always buy em cause they are reusable, and I drive on lots of dusty gravel so I clean mine often
oh yeah, also be very careful not to over oil your filter if you get one, because the excess oil can coat intake sensors and cause problems

The only reason I would buy one would be for its re-use ability. A knowledgeable Ford guy once told me that up to 5000 RPM, a Fram is hard to beat and trust me, if you Jeep is going over 5000 RPM, you've obviously fallen asleep at the wheel with your foot on the gas in neutral.

There's a huge difference I was just screwing around buy putting the filter direct to the TB with both K&N/Vibrant and the OEM paper filter sure Paper keeps out more dust, when I put the paper filter direct to the tb I lost huge power felt like 100hp... but then I took it off for the aftermarket and more power... You won't get huge gains but either way it lets the engine breath alot easier....try breating in and out on a paper filter then try on Aftermarket filter... tell me which u'd rather have.... K&N are expensive I have Vibrant and it was like 35$ I think and works great....

I got a K&N drop in for my Jeep (92 Yj 4.0L) a few years ago, judging by the seat of the pants it made the motor feel a bit peppier on the top end. Then I did an intake tube and K&N from these guys: http://www.turbocity.com/default.php?cPath=17_25 It was pricey by the time I got it across the border, but it sure freed up some power, and sounds like a blower under the hood. Worth the money though, probably not. For a 4.0L I wouldn't think it should cost much more than $50 though, what year/model is the Jeep?

K & N breathes better, because it filters LESS. However, because it's basically wet all the time, it actually captures small dust really well.
Drop-in filters are basically a sham because stock air filters are big enough to flow as much as the airbox will allow (unless your airbox is garbage like my car, but my K & N was free so ...). If you want to replace your entire airbox (ie: what makesyour engine's intake quiet) then a K & N is a good investment because they need to be cleaned a lot.
