I'm not saying that this is a bad thing at all but this is not a prison its a jail. So these are people that have stolen cars, drug possession, ect. The murders, rapests, ect dont live in the tents. It seems that the hardcore criminals get better treatment if you ask me.

Your right about that, and there's a country in Europe that gives their inmates spa treatment, massages and everything to rehabilitate them! (I can't remember the name of the country it was in a video I watched for Corrections class last semester)

is it really 120 degrees in Iraq?

Its a start! Every jail/prison should be at least this hospitable.

Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks.
:shudder: to much info there!

When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton.

If you don't like it, don't come back."

^^This is the best part.

Not this time of year but say around April/ May till October it may be

I like that sheriff
Rehabilitation of inmates is mostly a crock of doodoo. It works in a few cases but basically it is hand holding KOOMBYYAAAaaa nonsense. There are a lot of sex offenders, repeat criminals, molesters, and armed robbery types in most city/ county jails. The local jail down here has small windows and no air conditioning (100 degrees F with 100% humidity in the Summer). I am sorry but jail time should not be a welcome change to the daily routine. Anyone who thinks rehabilitation works let me give them a challenge, how many people do you know were rehabilitated while in jail (not scared straight but given a better opportunity while in the hoosegow).

Very cool post!

Two years ago I was down in Phoenix on a Law Enforcement Conference and three of us had the opportunity to take a tour of the prison. It is an eye opener.

- Prisoners at Tent City are mostly short timers, less than 2 years.

- There is a tall guard tower with an american flag and a "vacancy" neon sign hanging from it.

- In the tents, there were stand up fans at each end. One prisoner was caught damaging a fan, so ALL of them were taken away.

- When Sherriff Joe began filling the yard with prisoners, he ended up with an empty wing in one of the other prisons (an air conditioned one I might add). At the same time there was an epidemic of animal cruelty acts and the SPCA was full, so they put the dogs in the cells in the empty air conditioned prison. PLUS it cost more to feed the dogs daily then the prisoners at tent city (like 90 cents instead of 45 or so).

- The women's and men's yards are right next to each other, separated by a pair of fences.

- Joe Arpaio gets daily death threats and is tagged for "human rights violations", but is always re-elected into his post and usually with a votiing count of 80% or more.

- When prisoners are asked if they would want to be outside or inside, they pick outside - inside the facility it is only 5 degrees or so cooler and smells, with fairly restricted movement (compared to outside that is).

- Youth prisoners take schooling classes there. This area is one of the few air conditioned places, so there is good incentive to take the courses. Their prison priviledges are directly tied to how well they do in school, and from what we saw it is a very effective program.

When we talked with Joe, he just laughs at how the Canadian prison system works. On the other hand, the prisoners down there don't complain at all. You really don't want to complain to this guy.

Anyway there's way more to the story, but here's some pics:

Sorry, no pics of me and my two buddies scared sh**less!

Mark

Wicked NOBASS! So far I've only gotten to see the videos in class last semester on how different prisons/jails are ran across the world. And there's a huge difference between a lot of them and how their law enforcement is ran, I can't wait till my field placement I plan on taking it in a correction facility. My best friend got into Brookside Youth Correctional Centre (Not sure if thats the actual title of the place) and a couple others in my class are going to a supermax prison in Ontario (can't remember the name of it) (all girls might I add, the guys are taking their placements with Durham Regional Police, Toronto Metro Police, OPP, and OPG[Ontario Power Generation] Security)
