Funny, but there have not been any great bands since '95 -- think about it, every movie and show uses Jeff Buckley in their sound tracks (eg Vanilla Sky)

I mostly listen to Jazz nowadays Madeline Peyroux's new disc is great.

The only Rock Album I bought this year is Bob Dylan's "Modern World" -- I like it alot --- hmmm new group I like.......none.

It is a different world out there -- today's generations do not seem capable of reading books without pictures, let alone listening to music without grunts and chest beats from Huggy Bear wanna be's or skanks howling like dogs in heat....

I know it certainly holds true with me and I find that the only "new" music I really like is stuff that sounds like the music that I was listening to during my 'core music' era. It may be new but it sounds like old.

Look around, ask people - so far I have found this to be pretty accurate for most people.
I will be 26 in 2 weeks, so born in 1980.. and I probably listen to more music that was mastered beore I was 10 to music that was after... I got Kill em all when I was 8, and never looked back. I am a huge fan of clasic rock, you couldn't keep me from listening to Frampton, neil young, dylan, joplin, hendrix, led zep, pink floyd, Triumph, boston, etc, etc..

I don't think my age, or generation has anything really to do with my tastes. I just think Rap music isn't worth the cd it's recorded on. I hate country with a passion, but I can at least respect the artist as a musician.

Given the recent discussion, I will add this, I love AC/DC.. they are a great band, but are they? they have a great sound, Angus, and Malcom are amazing at what they do, but there isn't any real substance to their songs... they all kinda blend together. Bon Scott was a performer if not anythign else, and it showed... AC/DC got lucky inding a replacement that to the casual listener sound identical to Bon, but take Bon, or his voice out o the equation, and would they have done well?

Guns & Roses were at the height o their career in the late 80's early 90's, Slash is one of my favorite guitarists, a master at what he does, but take Axl out of that picture, and the band wouldn't be anywhere near where they were. It's his voice that put that band on the charts. Nirvana is an all time fav of mine, you could remove Dave grohl, and the band would have gone on, but take out Cobain, and Nirvana dies. (no pun intended)

Pearl Jam was another great band that even though they seemed to drop out o things for a while, still hit the play list every time. Ten was a huge album, as was VS, but they seemed to suffer a bit after that.

I just look at the 'mega' bands, and can't see 3 days grace, blink 182, or bands like that being around in 20 years.

regards, Mark

I agree that the bands aren't trying as hard... it seems that a lot of new bands out, are in it for the one big single that the radio gets however much money to play to death, so that the band seems popular, then they fade away... the 80's was big for one hit wonders, I think the late 90's to present have more than the 80's ever did...

that being said, I wouldn't lose any sleep if I never had to hear any more Nickelback clones on the radio... or nickelback for that matter.

Lightbulb

So the dude in his mid 40s praises Black Sabbath and the dude in his mid 20s praises Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

Yeah... my theory is definity w a y off

And yes I read the entire threads but weed out all the profiling and you get down to the basics of my theorem. Hell I enjoy some 60s/70s stuff and some 90s/new stuff but when I reach for something I really "want" to listen to, for me it's gotta be the 80s.

As for more recent iconic musical acts: Eminem, Greenday, and Nickleback, to name a few, love 'em or hate 'em will be remembered as musical successes.

My dad is big into music and hates metallica and other bands I like from the 80's and 90's.

Its the same for every generation, "our" music was always best.

I'm not a country fan by any strech of the imagination, I won't even let it play through my speakers, and my opinion of rap is well, I don't count that as music.

I mean take Metal circa late 70's early 80's, and you have Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black sabath (and then Ozzy) Megadeth, Motorhead, judas priest, and the list goes on.. as far as Metal goes what if any new bands, say rom 1990 on have even come close to taking their place once they stop recording; or are even worth buying the cd for?

Mark
So what your saying is that there is no more good metal? Because you dont seem to be a fan of music as a whole as much as you are a hard rock and metal fan.

Now im my opinion music now is never going to be as good as the bands you listed as well as your Zepplins, Hendrix, Floyd ect ect ect. But thats because everything new and ground breaking in music has been done by someone at sometime so you will most likly never have those revolutionary artists that started it all, its that whole they dont make them like they used to concept.

But you do see bands putting 2 or more types of music together to give a new sound, the only shitty thing about that is that when that happens the flavor of the weeks gets played to death combind that and peoples 45 second attention span now adays and you get music phases that last about as long as the one hit that band just put out, look at the Rap Metal phase, the many many types of Emo hell ever half the crap in the 80s and 90s just becomes a flavor of the week.

But the pioneers and trendsetters will always be classics, and they will never make music as good as they did because people get rich of playing things that sound the same *cough coughNICKLEBACK* so after one or maybe 2 bands start something new its no longer new and the music just wont be as good as those first one or two bands.

Now if you will excuse me I must get back to the bottle of Rye Ive been working on all day long, and Im not gonna lie if i read this tomorrow and it sounds dumb I will blame being drunk if it sounds good Ill consider myself brilliant. Good Day
