But one of my main points of contension would be the utter lack of features... Id sooner have a reciever with a remote control for starters...
Also I don't know why old recievers go for so much on ebay... all the classics at home (including a Mac240 tube) were purchased for diddly squat at yard sales... lol..

Great price on a pair of very good speakers:
http://www.av123.com/products_produc...ers&product=80
Note it is only rated down to 65hz +/-3dB SPL.
$299.00 USD.
Grab the $299 cd player from them also and for $600usd you have a killer start. Pair it all up with a solid used receiver/integrated amp and you can have very good sq for $1000

After selling home audio for a good long time, including decent mid level gear like Rotel, Harmon Kardon and Onkyo, I chose a Yamaha integrated receiver for my system. For $$ to performance it just made sense.
I too support that you should look at a set of simple bookshelf size speakers Jordy. Something with a 6.5 or 5.25 and tweet will mesh fine with your woofer. Pay more for the mid than the tweet.
lol, I have to comment on this Linkwitz guy - for sure the man likes to play with a calculator and appears to be no dummy but that Thor link... http://www.linkwitzlab.com/thor-design.htm
Who woulda thought that a 12" in almost 2cubic feet would have low bass, eh? what a visionary

And then you go to say your looking at Krell?
If SQ on a budget is your concern stay away from Krell, far far away.
There is a saying in High-end audio..."price is the feature"
Meaning that the only reason to buy a $10,000 Krell amp over a $1,000 Rotel amp is so you can say "this cost me $10,000."

I think those old recievers are still worth bucks today because of build quality. There's a reason that so much 20-30 year old stuff still works well.
Hell, I sold a Luxman R1050 to some kid who proceeded to bridge the thing into 2 ohm mono! He popped the fuses (0.5A I think) so he replaced them with 30A and what do you think happened?
The damn thing worked perfectly. I rescued it back from him a few months later and it's my outdoor party system now.

I still think you will need more then a 6.5" mid to pick up the bass after 50hz... but thats up to you...

Yeah... that's pretty much where I'm stuck right now. Finding a decent set of speakers that can play down to 50hz.
I know that bookshelf is probably the way to go due to the size of the room but I think I'll have a hard time finding them.

probably not in the leage of the stuff you guys are looking at, but check out the paradigm atom bookshelfs if they still make em, they used to get pretty good bang for the buck reviews
I like my Paradigm monitor 9's, not an overly big tower, but they play decently low, I have my pw2200 crossed over at 50hz and the 9's play down to that just fine.......
