Linn is great stuff (that’s why I have a Trikan centre channel) but as stated it is pricey stuff.
At $1500 you can get a number of products new and a much wider selection used, I have expensive taste so I would consider used to get more for my $.
Costs saving moves include components that perform more than one function (integrated amps, receivers, CD/tuner/ amp combos are available too). You should also consider products you can grow into (home theatre receivers) which would save money down the line.
A portable CD player will give you 80% of the fidelity of the finest CD player made so that could be a nice cost saver.
Use cheepie RCA and speaker wire that will save pennies (swap in higher priced products later to see if there is an audible difference)
As far as speakers go I have always liked bookshelf speakers (with a sub if possible) since they are easy to move, fit in apartments, and often sound better than floor standing speakers (they don’t try to do as much they just do the mid bass to HF). Down side to bookshelf speakers is they require stands and are easy to tip over (the sub requires a special subwoofer output n the preamp section).
Recommended brands vaguely close to your price range include, but are not limited too:
Electronics (used): Linn, Denon, Marantz, simaudio Moon, Magnum Dynalab
Electronics (new) Denon, Marantz, Yamaha, Cambridge audio, Jamo
Speakers (used): Snell, Mirage, Linn, Definitive, B&W, Dynaudio, Morel, NHT, Sequerra, HiVi, Triangle, Mission and Totem
Speakers (New): Polk, Athena Technologies, NHT, Totem (in wall speakers!), Jamo, and Wharfdale
TIVOLI makes a cute table radio too.

Marantz has made decent sounding gear for years. That would be a decent vinatge SS amp.

^^That is a very nice amp for that price!
I have always liked Marantz and they have historiclly made great stuff. Contrary to what 'some' people belive you do not need tons of power. Especially in a small to mid sized room.

^ Marantz is very good.
Just avoid McIntosh.
Its ridiculously expensive stuff. Its designed impec-ably... so when it does break down.. its so easy to fix since the schmatics are very easy to understand and read.
But the actual sound performance doesn't constitute the price: from what I've heard.
I'm personally looking at some used Krell amps.
These brand new Yamaha pro audio amps are supposedly wicked value for how much ultra clean power you get for $800.
Like they're 600RMS X2 at 8ohms... for about $800 or so. Yet the soundstage and timbre was really incredible. They blew me away. I can check into it further for you if you want.

You say McIntosh is over priced for the SQ - yet you have never heard them yourself.
And then you go to say your looking at Krell?
If SQ on a budget is your concern stay away from Krell, far far away.
There is a saying in High-end audio..."price is the feature"
Meaning that the only reason to buy a $10,000 Krell amp over a $1,000 Rotel amp is so you can say "this cost me $10,000."
