GPS?
#1
I was thinking about getting a GPS system for my car. Does anyone have an opinion on them?
I've used one that hooks up to a laptop, but would prefer a separate/stand alone device if possible. With maps for both Canada and the US.
I think one that connects to a PDA would probably also be great. I think I saw one that connects to an iPaq??
So what do you people know about them?

I run them in every vehicle in my fleet. Both for navigation, and for real time vehicle tracking.
I would suggest the Garmin GPS 274. It's got a decent size color and backlit screen, and is substantially brighter than the GPS 174 model for daylight viewing. I would suggest getting a packaged kit that includes an external antenae and power cable for perminent use in a vehicle. Even if you just silicone the mount the mounting bracket to the top of your dash, it's worth it to have the external antenea. Satelite coverage during different parts of the day comes and goes. Right now where I am, there is one of the 24 GPS satelites down for maintanence, and it really creates a big hole in coverage in the afternoon.
The PDA based units still require a decent reciever, and then your stuck buying something like a Garmin GPS III which is just about the same price as the 274.
Good luck.

I have a Garmin 3600a, which is aviation specfic, but does "normal" gps stuff too. They make a 3600 (no a) as well as a pocket pc based one called the m5.
Works quite nicely and everything is integrated. I believe the US and Canada maps come with the regular units, I had to buy them extra as mine came with aviation data...
