Getting Fired
#21
Just try to remember that it isn't you firing these people, it's "The Company". Unfortunately a little detachment is sometime required to get through the parts of our jobs we hate the most.
With the numbers mentioned it could be production relocation, cyclical work, or someother reorganization that has a definate business goal.
If me, I would try to look them straight in the eye, explain the business case, and as a result "The Company" has to take these measures.
I always appreciate the straight story. No bs.
Good luck Adam.

the best way to get fired in my mind is to attach a mistletoe to your back belt loop and say "you know what to do" as you walk up to your boss.
but as far as firing people are concerned.
No offense, but sux to be you man,.... thats 161 families that are going to be badly hurt, by what your about to do... man oh man... if it was me, Id pray to God to ask for everything to come out at least semi-alright. Stats Canada states that: 98% of families have less then $2500 in savings. When you fire them, that $2500 or less is going to get sucked up pretty fast by mortgage and other expenses. Jeez, I feel for you and them. I honestly hope to God that everything goes okay... wow that sure ruined my day hearing you have to do that. best of luck pal..... God be with you

161 people huh?
Well you could always get them all in the same room and tell them that due to cutbacks you have no choice but to lay off 161 people. Then tell them that according to themselves they all seem to know everything anyways so they will be the ones to go as they should be the most prosporous.

here's a bit of advice;
do not let the individuals in question know what's about to happen. dismiss them on the spot with compensation (minimum 2 weeks to 1 month) so that they don't feel totally slapped in the face. this keeps sabotage and vengeful foul play to a minimum.
i also highly sugest consulting with a labor lawyer about the intricancies of your actions. it would also be advisable to have the lawyer present as you announce the sad news.
well, that's the professional side of things... pleasentries are another story...

Thanks for the advice Mr.Marco.
I'm obviously in a large business, so yes a lawyer is being used for all proceedings. (and as you know I'm not in the same country as you)
Most of the employed are on term contracts, and they were hired under the premise of completing a project. I don't think it's entirely a surprise to many, but as you mention, it's good to keep moral up. At some point though, the 11 managers I've mentioned, will be scheduled not to come back to work.
Unfortunately, I'm stuck in a legal position where I can't tell them anything until the project finish date is finalized. (1 month notice) We are experiencing weather related delays that can effect this by weeks.
So I've got a group of people that I can't tell them when they are leaving, because then I'm legally bound to give them a notice of termination. This could leave the company without a workforce to finish the project.
JohnVroom, I've already pursued all of what you've recommended.
What specifically I've been looking for in this post, is an event that some of you might have experienced where a personal touch made the process more bearable.
Thanks for the laughs though....I'd hate to work for you guys!

My question would be, if you want to leave, why not just go and find something you DO enjoy, and simply quit, why do you NEED to get fired?
Are you worried about severance or how quick you'll get EI? Or do you just need a good vacation from it all?
What's wrong with being straight with the people you work with? Some say "the truth hurts" I say "only if you're not used to it".
