Question

Can anyone tell me the pros/cons about radar detectors? (Yes - I know they are typically illegal in Canada and they encourage speeding, but I'm not in this to discuss the ethics.) I thought that the police have equipment to notify them if you have a detector in your car? Can anyone recommend a good model? I'm looking for good information from people and any "personal experiences" with radar detectors....thanks!

i dont think they re illegal. excessive speed is. you are allowed to have anything installed in your vehicle. neon lights, undercar led kits. have the lights on in your car while your driving distracts other cars and that is illegal. have your radar going isnt illegal. pros is that you will be alerted if there is a cop. con is. that youl rely on it instead of drving with consideration and due care. there is a really good way to advise you if there is a possible ticket coming to you. your speedometer. sorry we spl guys have cars that are way too heavy and we rarely speeed. we usually are going very slow. lol

Just for the record, (hmmmm i didnt want to get into ethics discussion but...) I'm not a speed-demon, I drive the limit on the highways. I just get unlucky when it comes to stuff like, "rolling stops", "illegal left hand turns between 9am-11am" stuff like that - there always seems to be a cop lurking around the corner. Just wanted to clear that up...so again...anyone out there with radar-detector advice/experience I would love to hear from ya...(thx for the feedback so far, keep it comin)

I live in NB and had a radar detector...it is ilegal to ahve them here. so when I got it I made sure I paid the extra for the "undetectable" radar detector. was more of a pain in the but than anything...it allways went off for no reason...and well one day they were able to detect it and they fined me $144 + took the radar detector...so my suggestion...don't gte one! :S lol

"Automobile Radar Detectors
It is illegal to take automobile radar detectors into the provinces of Qubec, Ontario, and Manitoba or into the Yukon and Northwest territories. The police will confiscate radar detectors, whether in use or not, and may impose fines up to $1000."

"Section 203(1) of the Highway Traffic Act states:
- No person shall drive a motor vehicle equipped with a device for detecting radar speed determination equipment or be in possession of a radar detector in a motor vehicle. Fines for an offence under this Section could be $230 and the “radar detector” can be seized."

Currently searching for the law specifically for Ontario though the very first one states it is illegal can be confiscated and/or fined up to $1000.

They can be legally bought on www.sears.com (american site) lol kind of funny.

Iv'e own and used an detector for 20+ years. Granted there ok to have/ use in Alberta. The way I look at it I like to know when I'm being looked at. It's an game we play. Before they were legal I liked it more. The officer would sit on the side of the road and leave his unit on and after it went " SPEEDER " he would just jump out ect. Now it's leave it in the off position till they have you in there sights the Bam! No signal sent means no signal recieved.
P.M. me if you want exta info

Theoretically, since cops are using laser more than radar, you technically are allowed to have a Laser detector in your car, and there's nothing they can do about it.

I'd carry a copy of the Highway Traffic Act with me though, with the appropriate section highlighted, as well as an affidavit from a lawyer saying that he has been retained to counter any charges for you having a Legal Device.
