Fuel economy is determined by a few things:
1. How well your O2 sensor works thus helping the computer deliver ONLY as much fuel as it needs. Actually, make sure all sensors are working good, no vacuum leaks.
2. How freely your INTAKE flows ... car will sound louder and louder the more and more u pull stuff off your intake. Colder the air, the better on gas your vehicle will get. K & N will increase fuel economy, I hate K & N's baloney marketing too, but it's true.
3. Manual trans ... better on gas, more efficient than Auto
So, free up the intake, make sure your sensors are all working and take it easy on the pedal. Free flowing exhaust makes more power per unit fuel BUT requires more fuel on average (headers fix that).

After 20,000km my 03 Z24 is finally get some mileage to it... I would go from London to Chatham on full tank and would be in the middle of 3/4 and full.. couple weekends i went it was just under the full mark... I use Vibrant intake and it does make the engine louder for sure you hear the engine suckin the air in.... as dumb as it maybe I even removed the air system all together just used open TB and even that had more of a gain to it... but it's back on using the stock air box/Vibrant filter

I find with my car putting in higher octane I get better gas miage (I think it is because of my knock sensor not retarding my timing) I think..
Here is some voodoo that we have used and has paid for itself. The Fitch fuel catalyst http://www.fitchfuelcatalyst.com/techinfo/index.html It seems like voodoo mut the emissions testing we have done (we are now environmentally complient) and the fuel consumption testing we have done (#2 fuel) proves it works. I have one for my car I will put in shortly.
