Second, I've been seeing alot of people posting Tom Morello as one of their favourites.
Tom is good, no argument there, but the guy uses mostly effects pedals. I don't think I've ever heard him go into a 2-3 minuet solo like Kirk Hammet or Zakk Wylde.

Also I have a couple discs full of songs where I like the solo's. None of them are 2-3 minutes, a song shouldn't even be that long. Also none of them are your typical "shredder" type guitarists. Some of my all time favorite guitar solos are by J. Mascis from Dinosaur JR. and Matthew Sweet. Also the Meat Puppets have a few cool solos. </font>[/QUOTE]Zakk doesn't use much for effects. I think just a Overdrive and a eq. Kirk uses some kind of digital wah on all his solos now.

Kirk is wicked live. I was within spitting distance of him at the last show in Saskatoon. He's a very good performer. I can't say he is better then his Senior Toni Iommi or Jimmy Page.
I will probably never have a chance to see those particular legends.

Zakk uses very little for effcts and neither does Kirk.
Kirk uses Wah quite a bit, but so did Jimi Hendrix. In fact you can't play alot of Metallica without using Wah, same goes for Hendrix.
But Morello uses all kinds of effects...if you play electric guitar at all and know what your talking about, just by listening to the music you can tell when effects pedal's are being used....and Rage used them alot....so does Audioslave.

Even just watching the DVD's you can tell that he has a level of skill and his own style that's unmatched by anybody in the same category of music. Even Dave Mustain doesn't touch Kirk.

All rock guitarists use effects, that was my point, who cares if it's just an Overdrive, EQ, and wah pedal, or a flanger and a choruser, effects are used in all rock guitar. Also check out the new CA&E, there are two producers who basically say that what you hear on the record usually is impossible for the artist to do live. I am guessing that since it's live it just kicks *** and you don't notice that either a part is missing or it is being played but not by anyone on stage.

All music uses processing....if you're recording in a 25 by 25 foot room your gonna have echoes and reverb sometimes when it's not wanted. Proscessing get's rid of all of that. Obviously live is totally different than sitting in a recording studio with the band and you are never going to get the same sound. There's no way in hell, just by using simple logic you can figure that out.
I think that you have misunderstood what my idea of a great guitar player is also.
A great guitar player is someone that takes the time to sit down and play with different things in a song..he/she also needs excellent dexterity in the hands. But a great guitar player, to me, isn't someone that just plays what's on the sheet of paper in front of them....a great guitar player to me goes outside the box and goes far beyond what's expected of him/her.

I really miss the days when songs were at least 5 minuets long. Back when it was about the music not about MTV and being rated the best by people that don't give a **** about the music.
I mean look at Stairway To Heaven, one of the most well known songs througout the world. It was over 5 mins long...something 13 or 14 minuets, did it need to be that long...probably not, but does anyone complain, when they hear that whole song, that it's too long? Not likely.
I miss the days when music was well thought out and had meaning. Now the only music that's well thought out and is mainstream, is the bands like System Of A Down and the political bands like them and what Rage used to be. other than that music has become a hopped up version of Country Music......which to me, is really sad to see. Where the hell did all the rebel bands go? I love music from the days when everything was just f*** you, and that was it. Bands that played because they loved the music. What the hell happened?

Some of my favorite songs are less than a minute long. I am bored of a song longer than 5 minutes, I can't stand Pink Floyd, 10 minute intros with a 3 minute song and a 10 minute outro to finish it off. Give me a wall of noise some nonsensical lyrics and finish it off in under 3 minutes and I am happy.
