I spent $400 at the vet on my Ferret back in the day. 2 days later the vet said he needed another $400 operation again with no guarantee of success. It was damn hard but we put him down.
That was my last "pets are family" pet. Now, if the animal needs more work than it cost, well... Cold hearted? maybe.

Had a English bulldog, I know all to well about the vet. 2500.00 dog to begin with.
Check the bottom for you dogs paw ( if you have ice ) ours limped for a week, normally feels no pain she’s a tank, but she got blood blisters from the ice in the bottom of her paw, you just squeeze them and they heal on there own.. cost me 150 bucks and a 4 hour car ride to find that out.

Reality is what it is. The ferret had cancer. We had a tumour removed from it's tail. When it was determined the leision would not stay closed they wanted to take the tail. IMO THAT is cruel for THAT animal.
Plus they found a tumour on it's back at the same time.
Yeah I put it down, what a bastard eh?..

My dog is 14+ years old now, and he's on his last legs. I've been procrastinating making "the call" for a couple weeks now.
But I will.... soon.

Dukk, didn't you say once that you have(or had) a mix-breed dog? I can't imagine that you paid very much for it. So are you saying if your dog needed a couple hundred in x-rays or maybe some antibiotics for a common ailment or whatever, you would put it down?
On a side note:
I am all for putting down an old dog humanely, old farmer style. They know when you take them to the vet at that time any way. If you just let them walk out in front of you in a field, well you get the picture.....

I might as well get this off my chest now....
Good on ya B2B's! Vet costs are STUPID expensive! Reputable vets offer Petplan insurance these days that can definately be worth it in some owners cases.
I have paid out a lot more in vet bills for my 9 year old Boxer than she cost me. She cost me $600 from a guy from Calgary before I learned about proper breeding practices and what to look for in a breeder that I am getting a dog from. Or are we talking about a one time bill that totals more than the "animal" cost only? Do we keep tabs on what we have paid out in relation to what we paid for the "animal"? I had $200+ dollar bills just to clean her teeth for obvious health reasons, had benign tumors removed a few times now totaling well over $600, boosters, common ailments, allergic reactions, etc, etc..
NEWSFLASH, some peoples pets are a big part of the family & get treated just like their children. I wonder what my soon to be here daughter will think if her dad puts down her "animal" because it's sick?
