well i finally got s new compter today nothing special, an AMD 2400. now i want to upgrade the ram in it. right now it has 256mb. it shows in the manual that it uses either pc2100 (ddr266) or pc2700(ddr 333) and im looking to updrage to 1 gb of ram which one should i get?

is the hard drive out of my old computer compatible with with this new one?

and im also looking for some software
-a good cd burning program
-a good dvd viewing program
- ms word

harddrive being compatible is likely a yes. But that depends, if the motherboard in the new system is IDE or serial ata. The old drive is gonna be a regular ide harddrive. You could check the manual, or likely go look in your deivce manager

right click my computer>properties>hardware> and see what it shows in there.

For ram. Again, depending on what time of ram it is, sometimes if you've got pc2100, even if you put in 2700 it'll clock down to 2100.

On the ram issue, depending on whether your pc does dual channel memory, you'll likely wanna run either 2x512, or you could gran another 256 and a 512, but it wouldn't run dual channel at that point (small performance difference). As for choosing a brand, some systems are picky towards the brand of ram they use, i've personally always had good luck with kingston.

ms word....i believe only available with office. Not cheap, but if you talk nicely to me on messenger, i may be able to help you out there, in a fully legal way yet too!

CD burning software, depends if you wanna pay or not, windows xp has it's own cd burning software, although i prefer Nero. You can try the demo at www.nero.com if you like.

Dvd viewing software, i'm not sure if there's a free dvd decoder out there or not yet, but the most common one appears to be cyberlink power dvd.
