x-cess cargo!!! They always have a 200-or-less HT setup in there.
I personally have a pair of DJ speakers/ Bass bins with horns hooked up to an old-school pioneer amp and receiver.
Each bass bin has a 15" sub and a horn. They absolutely destroy any HT system I have heard, except in the listening rooms at the higher end audio stores.
I got them when I was into DJ'ing. They only cost me like 150 bucks for both. I imagine they arent TOO hard to come by in the buy and sell or what have you.
But maybe you want the more 'directional' sound deals.

For a HT in a box I like the Kenwood setups that were mentioned. The speakers are so-so but you get a real receiver with it so in the future one can replace the speakers first and then worry about a different receiver if they feel they need it.
If one has closer to a grand to spend then I recommend a 5.1 speaker set from someone like Polk, Athena, CV, AR and a $250-350 receiver.
The difference will be that the HT in a box systems are generally alright for theatre but not that hot for sound. The $600+ 5.1 speaker systems can actually reproduce music alright too.
Damn, this looks liek a good deal: http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...10&WLBS=fsweb5
Yamaha receiver and 5.1 set for $699. That's sweet. I just bought a Yamaha receiver (wish it was black not silver) and I really like it.

I would buy used from www.audiogon.com . A lot of people start small and move up quickly so you get a just broken in system for 50% of retail.
For speakers just buy 3 pairs of the same speaker like the Atom(Paradigm) or similar great sounding monitors.
Cheap subs are worthless so don't bother you'll just get boomy muddy bass.
For integrated receivers I had great luck with Marantz and Denon before I went with separates.
You do realize if you do this you'll be on the road to spending 20,000 $ to get where you want to be eh?

I like the inexpensive JVC receivers -- Kenwood are good too. I would buy a $200-$300 dollar pair of book shelves. "miniture" speakers suck...period
