Hey all...I am looking for a cheap home theatre-in-a-box or equivalent. I don't want to spend too much right now, because its only going to be really used for a coulple years and then be replaced when I buy my house. But I am pretty sick of just my TV sound. I don't really need anything huge as I live in a townhouse with neighbors . I already have a 27" Sony "Wega" TV and a Pioneer DVD player. So I don't need one with a dvd player, just an amp.
Anyone have any reccomendations?

I bought a good Sony HT in a box when I moved into my house.
Paid $1000 for it.
From the start I was pretty let down with it and it basically lasted about 3 months before I had enough and bought a real home theater. Now I am in bliss.
I use the 5 disc Sony as my DVD changer for my HT and the speakers are now on my computer run by an older Sony receiver.
Jmac is right. Get a decent receiver and a pair of speakers and add more when you move or have more money. Buy once and be happy.

I understand that need for buying good equipment. Its not that I want to cheap out, but right now I just want something to fill the gap between now and when I buy my house. After I buy my house I will be doing up an entire system which includes a new tv and entire theatre system. So for now, I just want a little somthing to add a little life to my movies. It won't be used for music and such, just movies.

Best low price speakers system I have heard is the Athena Micra system. Very decent and usable sub. Should be less than $800 at your local F/S. For low priced recievers check out the Panasonic SAHE75. A+B have them for $199 right now.
If that is too much, then I would check out the Denon package deal. A+B have them listed at $699. This inlcudes the AVR1604 reciever, 5 speakers and a sub. THe reciever is decent for the price, but I have not heard the speakers...

My vote is to buy a cheap pioneer amp (or equivilent) on a FS special and then buy a good set of book shekf speakers.
That way when you upgrade you can use the bookshelves for rears and you having somthing to show for it.

I have purchased 2 that im very happy with over the years..
3 years ago I purchased a Phillips 5.1 Home theatre in a box.. it has a powered sub and a am/fm tuner in it.. I paid just under 800 w/tax for it when new.. It is now down to 400 i believe at walmart..
The other one i purchased is a Samsung, bought it on an indian reserve for $299 / no tax.. it has the DVD/SVCD/VCD/MP3 and will play slides of jpg pictures off of cd, also has am/fm. was leary on buying it as it is not a powered subwoofer, but am completly satisfied with it.

Could go either way, buy a receiver and then buy a set of speakers like we did came in to around $500 at sears. Sony receiver, JBL 5.1 speaker set, sounds awesome.
A guy at my residence last year went out one day and came back with a Kenwood 5.1 system in a box and it was good but not the best of course. And he paid $500. He was watching Finding Nemo I think and his room was 4 doors down I could hear it from my room lol. (If u ask why Finding Nemo he did it for the 2 gurls he had with him lol)
My sister and her husband went the piece by piece way and they live in a town house as well. They bought a Sony Receiver and they have 4 speakers right now no sub yet. And their big wide screen tv of course lol They're buying piece by piece as they need or can afford it. They're not really gunnin for the sub as of yet since they live in a town house and dont want to disturb the neighbors, its one of those children neighborhoods as well so there's a baby or two on both side of the walls.
