So Im painting my car out at my god-father's hot rod shop in a couple weeks... can anyone recommend a mid grade or high grade at a good price paint ??

I was going to do the acrylic enamel thing for a quick'n'easy but Ive decided to go with a good base then clear...

Looking to spend $500-800 on materials... its a midsized car and Iam thinking metallic black with dark metallic green racing stripes and accents...

Edit: Iam guessing Ill need about 5 quarts of paint + primer & clear...

I'd say go with a big brand name like PPG or DuPont. I think brands like Sikkens or House of Kolor are pricier.

My first vehicle I ever owned I had painted metallic black 81 full-size 2wd GMC Jimmy. It had a lot of metallic in it and looked HOT! This was in 1992 too Had the top painted metallic GM slate. It was sharp. Paint was a custom mix. No factory color had that amount of metallic

If you are looking for a great, factory-color metallic black, Jeep has one called Brilliant Black Sapphire or something like that on the Grand Cherokee. It has a LOT of metallic in it. Enough to look charcoal grey in the sun; similar to how my Jimmy looked. I got some pics of one in that color if you like.

I'm going to have my Blazer (same as Sux's) painted Blue with Red flake at this point.

I was looking into House of Kolor and Sikkens, but they are $$$$.

I'm also leaning towards some of the PPG colours like Viper/WRX Blue and/or one of the off-black's as Sux mentioned.

If you're doing it yourself you can probably afford to spend a bit more on materials than you would if you were paying someone else, obviously.

Personally I wouldnt go too exotic if I were doing it, based on my experience and expertise with 'finesse' work...which is nill.

FOr me paint is something I'd rather paty someone to do right the first time than F-up myself and break a bunch of stuff in the ensuing temper tantrums

Actually Dupont was recommended to me as a really good mid grade paint by someone else too.. So I think that might be the stuff I'll go with...

Thanks for the heads up on the Sapphire paint.. if ya got a pic that would be cool... hit me up at haunz@hotmail..

Probably what Im going to do, is most of the body and prep work... and I might try spraying a little paint for fun.. but Ill probably leave most of that up to the guy that works...

I hadent even been out to the shop in ages... This guys son is so damn lucky.. lol... hes not even old enough to drive and they are there working on his truck.. 1983 S10 with air ride suspension, shaved everything, 17" rims, and a few other goodies... there is a 260cu" engine in it (or something) right now... but he just picked up a LT1 vette engine with the 5speed tranny...

I guess he's been looking at stuff for the sound system and seemed pretty impressed with my suggestions.. so I might be his new stereo guy from now on...

There was talk of me doing a blow through in the truck with a few 15's... this will of course be for traction...

^ hahaha.. yea, but considering the car, not worth the extra $$$$ for the very best paint...

That money would be better spent on the subwoofers I want

Sorry, I hate chrome. If this was the 70's and that was a Chopper, it might be cool, but this is 2005.

I'd like to do an entire car in crimson powder coat and black powder coated rims......there is NOTHING like powder coat.

I think when you can cover your car in chrome, you have enough money that it's not a waste.
