I installed the other crap an dupdated ad-aware with the "check for updates button" - voila 290 some bad files, fixed his internet explorer and everything.
PC works like a charm, or as well as a 350mhz can anyways. If it makes ya feel any better, i update mine whenever i run it and run it every couple of days or after i do something that i know is gonna cause me popups or whatever and i almost always find between 30-70 infected files. Sometimes i'm down as low as like 3 tracking cookies, but it's always a recurring problem.
The other thing you can use, like mentioned above is spybot search and destroy 1.3. Some people say it's better than adaware, others say adaware is better. It's a toss-up.
Doesn't hurt to also download the google toolbar, which also happens to block popup's that aren't in the form of spyware on your pc. Not to mention it being a solid search bar to have on the pc.
I run only google tool bar and ad-aware here n there and my pc does ok
(It's a given that you should have an antivirus program and a firewall)

The reason why I think some people dont find ad-aware to work for pop ups and stuff, is because they didnt fool around in the options.
Make sure to go in the options, and include the "deep registry scan". This will get rid of everything..pop ups, the "home page" that always gets changed. Big difference.
