Anywho, $8000 seems like a lot for a five year old Cavalier. Back in '90, I bought an '86 Cavalier with about the same milage, and it wasn't a Z24 either. Paid $5000 I think...

Mind you, that was a long time ago, and the car was plain jane, not Z24, not PW, PL, or anything. Just air, tilt & cruise. So with inflation and options, ya, $8000 seems about right.

Get it checked over by YOUR mecheanic before you finalize the sale though. Never trust the car lot's statement of "oh we had it saftey'ed".
True however negative feedback would be welcome if it wasn't from those who do not like J body's, because its easy to slander a vehicle you just don't like. And I don't need useless opinions like that. From those who don't min the vehicles or have experience with negative feedback then those types are welcome.

The car is worth $7,500 according to the canadian black book. I'm buying it from a dealership. It's better for them to make $500 rather than this hyundai in belleville to make $4,000 for a 2002.

As for being safetied it'll be safetied and we'll have the paper work displaying that as well. And my dad is going up early to take a look at it make sure it's all in order.

I liked my cav when I had it. 8000 sounds fair for what you are going to be getting. But they are fun little cars but the are a throw away car. Drive for a couple years then get a new one and the resale on them isnt that good. And they have a big trunk to fit stereo stuff

I Find that a lot with regular domestics. The resale value sticks to the imports I find. Though I do plan to keep this car for a very long time.

I own a 2000 Z22 and really like the car. For a cheap running around vehicle it's tough to beat them for their price and avaliable options. Plus there are alot of parts avaliable for them which is nice.

The one thing I'll warn you about with the Z24 is that when they start to get up in KM's the engine does tend to have alot more problems then the smaller 2.2L (Thats why I bought mine) my dad is a mechanic for GM and says he sees probably 4x the 2.4L engines come in with problems once they hit 125,000km or higher. Just thought I'd mention that.

If you're looking for longevity perhaps consider getting the 2.2L engine or stepping up another year or so and getting the EcoTech, the Eco engines are sopposed to be pretty rock solid for reliability.

Jeezzz....
You guys are too much...I realize some people dont like others, etc, but come on....

I guess sarcasm treally doesnt translate on the web.

I was making a sarcastic comment, hence the 'but seriously' to begin the next sentence.....and if you read the rest of the post I was mentioning a legit alternative.

And FYI, I really dont even NOT LIKE J=body's, so please dont assume things.

But to move on to grown up matters...
I really dont care about what people choose to drive, to each their own, just like I prefer my truck to a smaller car, you probably prefer the smaller car, whatever.

The Cavi's and Sunfire's DO have a horrible crash-test record with the US MTOs and such., it is constantly rated as one of the least safe vehicles in production, and thats a fact.

That being said, Jordy is also partly right...my Blazer is probably among the worst vehicles ever made in that it is potentially one of the easiest trucks on the road to tip over....but thats a trade-off I make for relying on 5000lbs of steel between me and another vehicle in a crash, God forbid.

But like I orginially said...isnt there anything on your bro-in-law's lot that you could find?

Trade in's are sometimes great when bargain hunting, as it were.

I really would wish you guys would lighten up, though, holy crap....

I would try to look around for better deals.

My sister got a 04 Intrepid for $12400 including evetything. My boss's wife got a 95 BMW convertable for $10000. My VP got a 97 BMW 5series for $16000.

I would try to look for something better but if you like that car buy it. It seems like if somebody has something negative to say, you don't even read it. So if you like it buy it.

Seriously, doesnt your Bro in law have anything on his lot that you can get? Maybe a trade in?

Those Cavi's and Sunfires are deathtraps.
Hardly a death trap... The wife and i got in a collision with ours going about 60km/hour and t-bond a Ranger our car the impact pretty damn good... if it wasn't for the air bags it would have been fixed... I turned around again and bought a 2003 Z24 myself.... As for Teri sounds not bad our 98 sunfire gt was 9,500$ with 60,000km on it... I'd say 7,000$ and you'd be good to go.

Buff - My apologies I did jump the gun on you, I appreciate your opinion but I am sorry for first off jumping at you like that man.

I did hear they were one of the worst cars in North America for safety, however I see so many people out there with them and I like the looks of them and what I have planned to do to it. I'd rather take the risk, besides its not like I'm gonna be right out there taking the risk of being in an accident. This'll be a car I REALLY baby the heck out of lol

As for any other deals on his lot, the only other option they had was a 5speed 96 Sunfire GT. I'm not lookin for another 5 speed not comfortable in them as my last car was a 5speed and because of the transmission style I got in an accident. Pulling into Tim Hortons on a hill car hit the back side of me. If it were an automatic I could have jammed on the gas easier and he would've missed me. (And don't think that it was my fault as when I went to turn there was NO ONE but the intersection is very close to the driveway the guy came around the corner speeding he had a red light and was trying to beat his oncoming traffic for the turn.

And all in all, I sat down and picked out types of cars I would like to buy for now. I even had a brand new Cobalt on my list. I had different years of Tiburons including brand new ones. Other Cavaliers, Sunfire GT Model only, Corolla's, Protege's. And it came down to the fact that I can do the most with the cavaliers, and the insurance and the vehicle price is right in my range for affordability. I know several people who own these vehicles and I see people driving them everyday, they honestly cannot be THAT bad if there are so many out there. Think of it that way. I've done my research I've seen the specs, the recalls, the safety risks, the worst in North America things etc etc. But this is still a car I want.

I told my brother in law to find me a Z24. And he did. And thankfully he found me a good one. On his list he had years from 97 to 2005. So if he did find a 2004-2005 for $10,000 and under I would have taken it. I really wanted a 97-98 because of the body style however and the different engine in the 98.

Thank you for the input on the 2.4L I did not know that that sort of sucks so lets hope it doesn't give me to much trouble or I'll be switchin to a 2.2L lol

Thanks guys for your input, its greatly appreciated, we'll find out this week whats happenin.

And gentlemen, keep in mind my last and first vehicle was a 1987 Z24 with 110,000 k (sold it at 133,000). 5 Speed transmission. This car was great, it did everything I needed it to do and for the first year I had absolutely no problems it was a great and fully reliable car. Of course later on things started to go because it is an old car you have to expect that. But those things that did go I was able to get fixed for very cheap. The only reason I sold the car was because the clutch was going, I got sick of 5 speed and I didn't have the time money or patience to fix the body from the accident after 2 years. I do not regret buying that car at all even tho I only paid $1,200 I still loved that car and I'll admit I miss that car. But after that experience I admit I love my bowties and I can see myself sticking with them
