The size of a box can make a night and day difference, measure up and let us know.
Building the box is not complicated, designing it is, if you don't know anything about it.
And , yes the multimeter method of setting the gain can put you in a safe spot.

yea building a box can be fun if you want to get creative.
You asked if using a deck with 4 volts out will help versus a 2 volt out deck, and IMO yes. the higher the voltage signal going to your amp, the more power you have to work with. you need to also look at the gauge wire used to power your amp. what size are you running (brand matters very little here).
Are your speakers running off an amp or the deck? Its possible that your deck power is distorting the speakers above 3/4 volume making it sound louder. When Im tuning a system without an o-scope i usually dont set it up to go above 3/4 volume on the deck. Most decks will give a clipped signal that high, which is why 4 volt signal output is ideal, it gives you more signal to work with.

oh and with a sealed box, you have some flexibility with size. Look at the recommended volume, and if you go slightly larger (10%) the bass should sound a bit deeper, or slightly smaller (10%) the bass will be tighter. If you skew much from that volume however, you could damage the sub and/or loose lots of efficiency from the sub.

Ok sorry it took so long to get back to you guys.
My friend was nice enough and let me have a ported box that met my volume requirements and it appears to be working as intended now. Possibly the larger sealed size was enough to make the sub say "forget you I'm not doing that" at loud volume levels.
It's SOOO loud now. I can't possibly imagine why anyone would want anymore bass than that. I can seriously feel it in my chest, ears, and eye *****. I fear my rear view mirror will be taking a tumble here shortly.
I'm looking at getting some higher quality subs. I was looking at some kicker 12" comp subs.
I really like Kicker. I've had really good experiences with them all ready and would like to continue sporting their brand. Plus that box looks awesome.
Oh and Sonic, +1 on the ported box idea. I don't notice any SQ differences between it and a sealed box. Only deeper lows and of course volume. I can't imagine ever using a sealed box again.
What are your thoughts? Was the box size really the issue? Are those subs I posted a link to a good fit for me?

After doing some research I found out that the sub you have now does not play well in sealed enclosure, and you sealed box was probably bigger than recommended, and porting it makes a world of difference which you have just found out lol....
I am not a fan of kicker's sub, however it does well for the average person's entry level sub mainly because its cheap and you get a box with it, if you really set on kickers, then, I suggest you try it before you buy it, if possible.
The power you have available and a budget for a decent sub with a custom made enclosure made specific for the sub, I can recommend a few. Remember good things are not cheap..hahah ...

The really is no best sub, you choose a sub depending on the space you have, power available, type of music you listen to, sound quality or output ot a mixture of both etc.. and of course your budget..lol...they are lots of options out there... here is a few that would make kickers look like a joke.. lol...

a few reasons why people go for a sealed box versus ported: Ported boxes are generally larger than a sealed one. Also, a sealed box is more forgiving as far as sizing versus ported. You need to really follow the required specs on a ported box as far as volume, port size, and port depth.
Obviously, ported boxes will get you more sound but it does give the sub a narrower frequency range.
