#7.) Once I had the inside of the car stripped out, I started preparing the sound deadening. I layed it out to heat it up in the sun. The product is Cascade Audio Engineering VB2-HD, and it is fairly stiff at room temperature.

#8.) The VB2-HD has the ability to stretch up to 50% greater than its original surface area. With this marvelous trait, I was able to heat and press each piece to conform to all the curves and contours of the floor. It took a long time, and once again my hands were pretty sore, but the results are fantastic.

#9.) As you can see, I avoided putting any product on areas that are structurally re-enforced. It’s kind of pointless considering it doesn’t resonate.

#10.) After a day and a half of pressing my knuckles into the floor, this is the result. Again, I focused on areas of high resonance. Note that this is just the floor and back seat area. The other areas will be profiled later.

#11.) This gives a better idea of the flexability of the product. That, and I’m proud of my handy work.

#12.) With the single layer of sound deadening layed down, I started putting pieces back into the car. Note that everything pictured fit back in, but it was a tight fit. I feel that running a second layer would have made things much more difficult. And as I found out later on some other pieces had a hard time with the single layer.

#13.) And then the fun began……

#14.) Man an I in trouble! That’s 120 feet of Monster M-10.2 speaker cable. Some how, that has to fit under my carpet.

More to come…..

NO John, there isn't an M3 on the horizon. I made that choice when I ordered this car.

I've got tons more pics, but I'm a bit tied up. BTW, I'm going through the Dubai airport in a few days. Want a lotto ticket?

I haven't been there since before the war. Has it changed any?

BTW, I'm really enjoying your various series and learning mucho. Good luck in the middle east.

^^^^well it's hard to believe, but they are doubling the size of the current Dubia airport. I mean jeezz, they just finished the HUGE new terminal 3 years ago....and now they are doubling that!!!!

There is a hole in the tarmac big enough to swallow the entire Toronto terminal about 50 meters deep..... big stuff.

Yeah, well that's the way things work there. During the late '70's to mid 80's they built 15 airports and 100's of intersection with no highways in between 'em in Saudi Arabia. Nobody knew what they were for until the Gulf War. On the other hand they have some pretty significant water problems there. They really need to spend in that arena. They only produce and store one days supply in areas. Considering the present security concerns one would think that additional capacity and better storage methods would be a better investment...I should turn this back over to sound deadening...sorry 'bout that.

I kind of left a few of you dangling…But,I’ve been busy…really busy at work.

I’ve got some free time now, so there will be more posts of my install as well as my tuning exploits.

Back to the floors!

15.) Here you can see the power wire going to the rear of the car. This is the factory routing for the power wire, but I’ve replaced the factory 2 awg wire with Monster Cable Powerflex competition 1/0 awg . This wire is absolutely beautiful, but it costs a lot. There is some technical mumbo jumbo regarding it’s design to justify it’s price; but to me it’s just pretty power wire. Translation: Buy other wire if you don’t want to spend a lot. I’ve also started laying down 3 runs of Monster Cable M10.2s speaker wire per side.

16.) I used duct tape to position the speaker wire bundle along the transmission tunnel. I’ve seen some other pretty ingenious methods of positioning wire, but I felt fine with the duct tape. Once the carpet gets put back in the car, that wire isn’t moving anywhere. I chose to route the speaker wire through the centre of the car, there are 2 reasons for this. The first reason is that my power wire runs along the passenger side, and the second is that my RCAs will be routed down the drivers side. I wanted to keep the speaker wire well away from these.

17.) Here you can see how I’ve pinned the speaker wire bundle to the chassis. This attachment point was originally used for the factory power wire. But, since I’ve upgraded the power wire and run it through the firewall at a different place, I’ve used the anchor point for the speaker wire bundle. Note that the speaker wire will actually cross the power wire at a right angle to reduce transmission noise. I was still routing the cable when the picture was taken. Isn’t that power wire pretty?

18.) On the driver’s side, I routed the speaker cable across before the firewall. The speaker wire would block the electronic throttle if I routed the wire across the fire wall. Note the Monster Cable XLN-Pro RCA routed to the approximate position of the deck. The RCA and speaker wire bundle is tie wrapped every 6” along the length of the seat brace.

19.) Here is another shot of the speaker wire and RCA routing. I tried to recess the additional wiring into the provided channel as much as possible. The carpet fit in this area is very tight.

20.) My next step was to install a barrier layer in the foot-well area. I used Cascade Audio Engineering VB4 cut to fit the area as one piece. Keeping the barrier layer as one piece helps to absorb more energy, as it eliminate coverage gaps. The VB4 is comprised of a layer of thick butyl rubber mated to flexible closed cell foam. The VB4 offers up to 4 times the low frequency attenuation versus VB2 HD. The down side is that it is ½” thick. Note how the throttle pedal mounting points barely poke through the VB4.

21.) Here you can see the coverage of the VB4 in relation to the rest of the front cabin area. Note that I’ve put new 8 awg power and ground wires to the central dash area to power the Alpine DVA-7996 deck, Alpine TME 580 multimedia screen, Audio Control Four.1i EQ, remote steering wheel button controller for the deck, and a power inverter for laptop use.

22.) Now this is where I started swearing. I’ll let you all look at the picture and see if you can guess what I’m going to talk about next.

Go to the very top of this thread and read my introduction again…….
