i was tempted to get the stuff at home depot, but then i heard a voice in the back of my head saying "do it right or don't do it at all". asphalt melts in the summer. unless you want that mess to deal with, go with a butyl based product (ie b-quiet, which is Canadian).

I agree. If you do it - do it right from the first time. By the end of the day however, its either the asphalt melting in your car or money melting in your wallet.

Here is a really cheap way to sound deaden your trunk/car.
Buy a few cans of rubberized undercoating from Canadian Tire. $6 to $10 per can.
It dries nicely and does not stink.
Spray where needed. Let dry.
Go to any carpet store or Home Depot and by some 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick carpet padding and lay it down over the spray. You can use closed cell or open cell but my research indicates closed cell, neoprene will work the best. Either way you can't go wrong. You can use a spray adhesive (high temp) or simply lay the padding down on the un dried undercoating that you just sprayed.

50 sq ft of the padding costs $25. You cant beat it.
