there's a whole thread over at diyma.com about asking a shop that retails to install stuff you did not buy there, and why it can **** them off, or your install price can cost more.

Having said that, can you tell me why the deadener they offer is so bad? or rather... why another product is so much better that it's worth buying elsewhere and having no support for it post-install, should it fall apart, fall off, or otherwise fail? should any of that unlikely stuff happen with the product they supply & install, they are fixing it at no charge to myself.

so... you're saying i should us triple what the installer reccomends?

I think i mentioned in a reply to Yuli that the rear speakers are going to be powered by the deck, as they are for rear fill only, and will be faded wayyyy down.

It's a 2 channel amp, btw... no outputs left for the rears anyhow.

you should not ask a shop to install stuff you did not buy from them? you must be joking, you simply must. shop makes 90% of their profit on labour. would you also buy the wood from a carpenter who's doing a job for you?

let's see this diyma.com thread, should be a good laugh

seems like you've read something or listen to someone who's an idiot. whoever you are listing to is scaring you more than giving you any advice.

stop reading diyma.com AND go to a different shop.

To answer your question (wow, did anyone?), yeah I like the price.
They're doing a lot in terms of pure labour and you'll have a complete car IMO ...
Yeah, this and that could be added (as members have suggested) and maybe they can round it to a nice number, like $650 or $600 but ... I would think it's in that ballpark for a good, clean install but a reputable place.

Yuli, it's only natural that if i buy a bunch of gear from the shop i get an install done in, i'm getting a discount on the the install.

Likewise, it's natural that if i don't buy the gear there, i'm not getting any discount on the install. Therefore it's gonna cost more. Make sense? That's all i'm sayin... not that they would increase the price.

Anyhow, lets say I ask them and they are cool with installing a different deadener.
Would something like Rammat BXT II be what i'm looking for?

That package has ~38sq/ft, so that would give me ~15 sqft per front door, and 4 ea. for the rear doors, as my installer of choice suggests.

DaVibe, Yuli did answer the question, then elaborated a bit

I tend to agree with you, it seems a reasonable price, considering the amount of labour (4-6 hours of solid work) ... and they are supplying spacers, all wiring, and deadening.

Have you checked out island car audio? A few years back, my friend got a 4 channel amp wired up in the trunk for $150ish. I know they sell dynamat.

from what i've read, there are much better choices than dynamat. And, honestly, I don't really like the 'vibe' down at island audio for some reason. Not sure I can put my thumb on what it is about that place.

My brother had a JVC double din installed there, they sold him cheap cheap pio speakers and ran them off the deck. Maybe he didnt want an amp, i dunno, but I was somewhat un-impressed. He wasnt happy about the install price, but is happy in the end though, so whatever

I'm pretty much set on McKay's as the installer, as i've bought almost all my gear there, and they've bent over backwards to keep me as a customer.

i am begining to think that you should go to a few more shops to get more quotes.

"discount on the install" can result in you buying crappy sound deadener that does not do anything and a wiring kit that is not a true 4 gauge. so in the end, you thought you got a discount, while they fully made their money back by selling you low quality products at high prices.

lets see. 7 hours at $60/hr = $420. then you are looking at $250 extra for an over priced wiring kit ($30 cost to them, that's not even considering that the amp is going under the driver seat so they wont even use half the kit and will end up re-selling the leftover wire) and total of 16sqft of deadener (another $30 cost for the shop)? lol cmon.

yuli, your numbers are a bit off there. The number i gave is taxes in, and we pay 12% here in BC. more like 420 in labout, 175 in parts, plus tax. The wiring kit is ~75, so the rest is deadener.

For what it's worth, i found the deadener they use on Sonic Electronix: here
