Question

I just was wondering the rationale behind placing the fuse as close as possible to the battery on the power cable. I would like some of your opinions or knowledge on why many people place the fuse on the + power cable.

Would it not be better to place it on the - ground cable in the trunk? Or even better on the ground cable just after the battery? I say this since current flows from - to +, so is there a reason for fusing on the receiving end of the current?

Thnanks guys,

Fabiano.

It's on the + because ground is everywhere. It's not that so many people place the fuse along +, EVERYBODY does...I hope.

You would also not fuse the ground because it'll just be a restriction in addition to it being useless.

Can anyone else explain this?

^^^^^^^^^^ Absolutly Correct ^^^^^^^^^^^^

Did you know in any automobile accident where a car has been rolled the first thing the fire department does is snip your battery cables.. for this exact reason..

You also want the fuse to be as close to the source as possible, so that if any of the wire burns, it is just a short length, rather than fusing farther back along the line, i.e inside the vehicle, where it could burn through the firewall/carpet, etc.

I hadn't thought of those instances, and I'm happy to have been enlightened. Thanks Chad, DWVW, Rockney and JeepBeats!

I was being narrowminded in thinking only of the situation in which current would be flowing quickly through the cable but didn't think how (ex pinched cable).

Now I am enlightened.

Thanks to all.

I'm wiring a Dodge Ram.Would anything be wrong with running the power wire from the factory distribution block instead of the battery. The reason is I have a Scosche wiring kit that came with a 12" piece of power cable with a spade lug on it and a 14" piece with nothing on it.Also I'm trying to use stretch every inch out of it cause it's gonna be close.

the 12" piece is to go from the battery terminal to the fuse holder, then use the 14' piece to go from the fuse to your trunk
