Moving the bass forward
#1
When the stereo is going I can hear that the bass is coming from the back of the car. I want the bass to blend seemlessly with the front stage, like the tweeters blend seemlessly with my mids.
I remember someone saying that a good mid-bass up-front will solve that. I currently have polk ex-3 components up front, and the mid-bass plays strong to about 130hz (that is a guess based on playing with my HP filter, somewhere in the 130 range is where I can tell the mids drop off quickly)
Mid-bass sounds are great, the sub ads the kick, and the mids place the sound right in the front stage. But, when the bass gets lower than what the components can produce, it is obviously coming from the back.
How can I move the bass forward? I know I could mount the sub in the center console, or somewhere up-front, but that will take a butt-load of custom work. Is there anything else I can do to work with this?
Front stage:
Polk EX 3 5.25" Components
Sub - single eD 9Kv.2 8"

I would try and get the front stage to play down to at least 80 hz. Then cross the sub over from 60-80 hz. Make sure you use a mat type of sound deadener if your front speakers are in the doors to alow them to play lower louder. Next run some sweeps through your subs to find any rattles or resonances in the back when the subs play. They are the number one culprit for pulling the image back. Get rid of those and you should be in pretty good shape. Oh yeah, also try playing with your subs polarity, that can help as well.

if you want the bass to sound like its up front, you had best spend some time figuring out how to get woofers up front, dwvw's advice is very good, it solves your resonance issues and gets your front midbass better but doesnt solve getting bass to sound like it is up front, what he has suggested will get you a helluvalot closer but not get you all the way there

Thanks guys. I'll try those options. I am not sure if I can get the fronts to play that low; the manufactures specs claim 68hz - 22khz freq. response, so my guess is that 80hz would be at the very bottom of their actual response. I'll turn off my hpf on the front, play with the sub phase.
I don't want to deaden because in a couple of months we will get a second car, then I'll move the system over there.
Thanks
