Wouldn't it work against me because then I would have less air resistance and compression
Then again some of the boxes I've seen have 1 foot by 3 foot spl ports would it for sure be more effective in my scenario

A leaky ported box with air gushing out of the trunk seams? Not to mention half of the entire non-squared portion of a small trunk would still be like 6-7 cubic feet, probably too big for a 15" and you'd want to use an even bigger port in that case, making it more or less free-air. If you were to use a sealed box that took up the entire useable square dimensions it would get louder and would transition better, and not because there's less space (1-2 cubes?), it's because the "box" isn't flexing and air pressure isn't being lost. Build in the trunk (just glue) a .5" MDF box around the sub, making it as large as possible (that's why build in the trunk). Don't even glue it to the baffle. Glued or resined cardboard will even do it. If you want more back-pressure with the same space than put another baffle behind the sub magnet, it'll only take up .065 cubes (.5" x 15: x 15"), that way you get back-pressure for the high's and the space for the lows remains. I really dunno if that'll work lol. Just throwing suggestions.
There are many that you wouldn't want to look past even if there were a bazillion because they model so well in gigantic boxes - Fi's 550W, RE XXX 15 & 18 (the 18 is QTC .707 @ 20.03 Hz in 26.1 cubes, differing in 2 Hz between <15->30 cubes), RE MX 18.
There aren't many woofers out there today that are suited for an IB set-up.

IB is like the listening area being inside the box, and outside factors aren't wanted.
A true IB would be like sitting inside a giant sealed box that is on your front lawn so walling off a trunk is not an IB and you can never have a true IB from a trunk. You have a weird 6th order bandpass because the cabin and trunk aren't completely sealed. I'm having a hard time calling the seams in the doors & small holes everywhere ports but they aren't sealed completely so that's what they act as. Open the trunk and you still don't have a true IB because the sealed portion isn't completely sealed and it becomes a horrible ported box. A normal ported box inside a trunk is still a sixth order in the end because the cabin isn't sealed. The only way to have a true IB in a car is to mount the subs on the roof and that's extra stupid.
