Well still no sound. I've double and triple checked the wiring and everything looks solid and appears to be connected to the right spot. (With the possible exception of the Power Antenna connection, which I've now tried on both the Power Antenna and Remote Amp connections from the new head unit.)

I'm starting to wonder if I actually have a Bose system... No logos anywhere and my Dad (who I bought the truck from) doesn't recall spec'ing that as an option when he put in the order. I went as far as looking up some of the RPO codes from the sticker in the glove box, with the two relevant items noted below. Looks like a plain ol' head unit, but I'm not sure about the "SPEAKER SYSTEM PERFORMANCE ENHANCED AUDIO" line.
UN0 RADIO AM/FM STEREO, SEEK/SCAN, CD, AUTO TONE, CLOCK, ETR
UQ3 SPEAKER SYSTEM PERFORMANCE ENHANCED AUDIO
Anyone able to comment on whether this might be the source of my woes?

Cheers, and thanks for all your help so far...

PS: I've dug out my multimeter and checked the resistance from my intended ground point on the frame to that relative to the ground wire from the vehicle harness. Fluctuated a bit but basically fluttered around 10 ohms or less... Not sure what this might tell someone who knows what they're looking at?

I'll be you a donut and a coffee that it has a factory amp. And the bad thing about that is that even when you bypass it, then you've got 2 ohm component speakers that won't work on your new head unit.
Mine was a "Premium" GM system. sounded like mud. It had a 4 in, 8 out amplifier/crossover. It's about 6"x6"x2-1/2" and ran on a 25 amp fuse from the fuse box.

Thats ok though, you probably need to replace all the speakers to get good sound anyway.

Good Luck.

My guess is the amp will be inside the plastic cover over the rear fender, passager side.

Unhappy

Well, I'm about ready to give up for now... Suspect you're right about the factory amp, though I've seen a few posts suggesting that it can still be done. Poked around the back of my 'burb and the fuse box and couldn't find anything like what you described or a 25-amp fuse I couldn't explain, but that doesn't mean its not there.

Definitely not ready to replace all my speakers. Just wanted an MP3/WMA CD player (to match what we have in the jeep so we can take disks from one to the other) and something with a 3.5mm aux input on the front (for my sirius radio and mp3 player).

Good news is the TheftLock feature was never activated on my old head unit, so at least I don't have to go hunt around for the code to unlock it. (And I can also verify that the speakers do indeed still work...)

Anyone want a brand new Sony head unit? I crimped the wires on the harness and I'm fairly certain they ain't gonna take it back at the store now. (At least I had a gift cert from work for 3/4 of the price.)

Maybe I should have sucked it up and just gone for the GM9-AUX adaptor from PIE...
