Help Needed

Hey,

I should first off say that I don't know a lot about car audio...

I own a 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 regular cab and I have some questions about installing components.

First, I just bought JL TR650-CSi and JL TR400-CXi's. I am wondering if anyone can refer me to a site or give me advice on how to remove my door and rear panels to get to the speakers.

Also, I have a Concept CC-452 amp running these speakers. I heard that if your speakers are underpowered there is a greater chance of them being damaged. Will this amp power them fine?

Thanks,

Mitch

If i were you I would consider investing in a Hanyes auto repair manual. They are only like 15 bucks but are worth every penny! Underpowering is ok as long as you don't try to drive the speakers to hard (ie. Trying to get performance and sound levels that require higher power). Distortion is what kill speakers, set your gains on your amp right and you should be fine.

just go to your local dealership and ask one of the guys in the back if there decent they'll show ya its not that hard though there should be a screw in the door cup if you have power windows even better if not you have to pop the C clip holdin the window crank and pull from the bottom corner and it should come off..

It is not that distortion hurts speakers; it's jsut that distortion, or what is perceived as distortion is usually a sign that something is too loud...

A driver can't tell the difference between music, noise, or distortion.. look into the thermal capabilities of the driver, or speaker, that is a common issue when speakers fail.

just an FYI,

Mark

Just make sure that you set the gains properly and not use the gain like a volume adjustment. The problem with underpowering something is people think that if they just turn their gain up it will get louder. to a point it will but it can overdrive your amplifier and start clipping, which basically starts sending dc to your speakers

Hey,

As far as removing the door panels, I think I will stop down at an autobody shop back home and have the local guy whom I know show me quickly. I hear the rear pillars are quite a pain though...

As for the speakers, the gain you refer to, is this the setting on the deck where it might say "Treble: +1" That? As long as I don't turn that up too high?

I was researching into installing components and I was reading about crossovers. It said that if the factory woofer and tweeter are in one speaker that you need a crossover. My truck has separate factory woofers and tweeters. I don't need a crossover do I? In the JL manual it has the connection for the woofer as such:

For the factory wiring is there separate connections for the tweeter and woofer? Should I hook it up as suggested by JL... in "series" (see above picture)?

Thanks for your help everyone!!

if you have components then you need a crossover (unless you plan to actively cross them) don't use the factory crossover if there is one. They didn't come with crossovers?

If by crossover do you mean the wires with the 'resistor-like' chunk in the middle? (SEE! I don't know my stuff! LOL!) In that picture there is a wire between the woofer and tweeter, is that the crossover?
