I ordered the BYK-740 (styrene supressant) someone recommended to me.. I actually placed the order awhile ago, but never called to confirm...
I wanted to do some glassn this weekend so I figured I better get on it.... Stuff was at my door the 2nd day after I confirmed the order!
Anyway, I'll let you guys know how it works out...

The easy explination is that its a wax with a polar end and a non polar tail... when you mix it with resin the polar end does not want to be in the resin, but the tail dosent mind...
TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
^ you end up with a surface like that which blocks the styrene from evaporating off.....

I tried the stuff out today... I just eyeballed how much I added.... If you guys want # of drops to add from an eye dropper (approx 1ml per drop) Ill find the mass per oz of resin on monday..... (this stuff weighs .86g/ml and you can add between .5-1% by weight)
When I added it to the resin and mixed it in the difference was apparent right away, and it reduced the smell a lot... when I was applying the mat soaked in resin and while it cured, the smell was still really strong... but definatly not as bad as usual...
It was still bad enough that I had to set up a fume hood... I forgot to turn the fan on after applying some resin and left... when I came back I could smell it downstairs when I came back
The other thing, they say it dosent effect the strenth of the finished product.. but warn not to add more then 1.25-1.5% or the layers of glass could eventually delaminate... hmmmm...
All in all, I would still rather use epoxy... stronger, lighter, and no nazty fumes... I think I found a place where I can buy it in bulk (1gal+ at a time) and it wont cost that much more then regular resin from canadian tire... (All the places I checked for epoxy were retarded expensive -RETAIL- thats why)
Anyway... If you have your own buisness they will send you a sample free... if anyone else wants to know how much this stuff costs to buy I can find out...
I can probably also be persuaded to send someone a sample or drop some of if they want to try it out for themselves... I have lots as 1sample will do a 50gal drum of resin...

Any material like that would certainly affect the resin strength... I would expect easier delamination and maybe issues if you add too much accelerator.
Epoxy bonds to the mat little better but they are very different resins. Neither resin’s fumes are that seriously toxic but you guys that fabricate day after day are certainly at risk for long term health risks.
My question: does this block the smell or the fumes...the product NEEDS to outgas to cure does this slow the gassing or does it simply filter the outgas. There is a chance the 'bad' fumes are still emitting but you just can’t smell them. (This is why they add that horrible smell to natural gas so you know it is there)

It keeps the styrene from evaporating off... see my post up there on how it works...
FYI styrene is about a nasty as you can get... it will seriously mess up liver and kidneys and is a known carcinogin...

^^ Ha it just kills you slow I worry about the stuff that kills you fast! Who wants to live forever?
Seriously even though there are much more aggressive carcinogens, installers and boat builders who use this stuff almost daily NEED to use the precautions. And guys who just do this once in a while should know they might be susceptible to the health issues this stuff can cause (I worry about the neurological affects)
I think the accelerant is a methyl ethyl keytone (keytones are awful)
BTW I almost bought it a few years ago in a space that had been flooded with Freon, it isn’t all that toxic but it displaces the oxygen and I almost suffocated.
