A couple Amature Questions

I am still new to audio and I have been working on piecing together a system on a budget.
I have searched, but have yet to find an answer to a couple questions that I have;

1) are home audio RCA's the same or suitable to use as pre-amp RCA's for car audio. Aside from twisted pair cables, what else might be a consideration for adequate RCA's? Gauge? Conductors?

2) Alpine recommends an enclose size of 0.6-1.25ft^3 for a single Type S 10" sub. If I wish to run 2 10's, am I correct to assume that I should be looking at an enclosure of approximately double the recommended volume for a single enclosure? or is there other consideration to be had?

3) I will be running the subs off of a mono channel rated 225W rms @ 4 ohms, or 360W rms @ 2 ohms. Am I better to run a single 12" 2 ohm sub, or 2 10" 4 ohm subs bridged for a 2 ohm load? I'm sure that this could be a matter of preference, but I am curious to receive some feedback. Also, if I bridge 2 4 ohm subs, how much power will be consumed by each load?

Thanks!

1. Twisted pair RCA's are the minimum for car audio....the twist helps the cable reject external interference with the signal.....there are many options that go up steadily in price but the return on the extra $$ has been debated to death....if your vehicle has the average amount of road noise stick with any twisted pair cable with gold-plated connectors....Stinger, Tsunami, Lightning Audio and others all make them for around the same $$$.

2> Yes and the other considerations are extensive.....box type (sealed or ported), type of music you listen to, vehicle type, etc.

3. Everything else being equal, the 2 10"s will usually be louder than 1 12" sub. In a dual sub setup, each one will get half the power produced by the amp into the net load.

Welcome to the board and the hobby/addiction.....

I have a sealed enclosure for 2 10's. I actually found this box. I believe it is made by Audiowave. I calculated the volume to be 1.1645ft^3, which I take to be ideal for the 2 Type S subs. The box is 3/4 thick fiberboard I think?? It is glued and nailed. Otherwise, are cheap enclosures generally the same?

I listen to alot of metal, rock, and some hip-hop.

if it's carpetted and feels solid (you stand and shake around on it) then your set to go. Although my personal opinion is, if you plan to keep that setup for wehile. take the money you'd save buying that 2nd sub and put to an amp that makes more power and stick with 1 12...the 1-12 vs 2-10's output is almost not noticable in a sealed application and the bigger amp on the 12 will make up the difference and probably sound better too

Yes cheap enclosures are usually all the same - CHEAP. I have been down a similar road and trust me you will be much better off with a properly made box to spec for those subs. A buddy of mine just took his 2 type s out of a prefab and put them in a custom made box and BIG difference. If you really need to use the prefab it seems like it is within spec, but there may have been a rason someone threw it away.
Just my $0.02

I am looking at purchasing Two Type S 10" subs. The model is SWS-1041. I understand that they are not making this model anymore, and the new type S (SWS-1043D) only comes as a dual voice coil.

I am looking from a price point perspective, and I think that the two 4ohm SVC Type S subs should work out fine.

Where there any other issues with the previous generation type S subs?

Buy the newer Dual 2ohm versions unless you can get the older one's with warranty. The newer models had a few improvements

I have a tentative arrangement to purchase "brand new in wrapper" (so he says) Type S SWS-1041 for $120 cash for a pair.

retail on the current model is $150-160 per unit.

from a dealer or "some guy".. It's only worthwhile if you can physically check out the products before buying them.

I am meeting someone local.

What is the best way to inspect a sub if I cannot put power to it?
