Caravan 2003 project
Well, after some good guidance by MR2NR, I purchased some nice accessories. My first project is to replace the subwoofer since the previous one just didn't have enough oomph and got stolen anyway.
I did my research but am still left with a few questions.
I want to build a vented box for my sub but how do I determine the frequency I want? I got that it's called Fb. The speaker sheet came with the Fs, I managed to calculate the Fc, but what about the Fb ? Since the length of the port will depend on it I assume I absolutely have to get it right.
What software do you use to make the drawing? I have tried Google sketch and BassBox 6. Bassbox does a pretty good job at it but it doesn’t quite get the angles correctly.
The best place I found to set my sub box is on the third row seat. I frequently use the 2nd row seats, but very rarely the third. I wanted to keep my cargo area free and I also wanted to make it so that I can easily remove the sub box and seat for when I need the full cargo area. I will use a connector for the wirer to make it easy to unplug. I am also thinking of some sort of a seat belt strap to attach the box to the seat in case of crash. Can you just imagine this monster coming flying to the back of your heard?
Pioneer recommends a box between 1.25 and 1.75 foot. BassBox tells me the one I draw is 2,2 feet, but it doesn't take into account the space used by the port. With a decent software and a scaled drawing, I imagine I'll be better set to calculate the exact cubic area.
The head unit I already had. Kenwood KDC-MP628
The new gear. Pioneer TSW-120D2 12 inch sub & MB Qart Mon Amp DSC500.1
Where I want to make it fit and my improvised jig. I had to make a jig because trying to make the measurements on a seat, the angles and length varied depending on how I was holding the tape or pressing on the cushion. There was also the slight detail of being -23 degrees and -30 with the windshield today. Kinda made me measure fast.
The drawings. The first one is sort of what I want to do. Just don't know how to draw it properly. The vent is also one that I am not sure how long to do it.
The type of butt cuts I'd like to do (got that picture from somewhere else can't remember, probably here)

Don't know if this will help, but my old Aerostar ended up with this box first:
That worked OK but then we re-arranged the seating so I did this box:
Both sounded fine, there was more room for people and stuff with the second row bench out......
Personally I would never put a sub box on a seat.....the possibilities of it flying around in an emergency are too scary for me to take a chance on.....

As mentioned that would be scary as hell to have coming at you in an accident. I have a 2001 Caravan shorty and I'm putting a 4.5cuft @ 38hz ported box going in the rear hatch and it still leaves me with room on top With all my seating.
