Hey everyone, just found this forum! Great site.

I have an '86 Buick Regal.

Everything is stock, with an Alpine CDA-9856 head unit on the way.

I need to replace the front 3.5" speakers, which shouldn't be a problem.

My big problem is the rear speakers.
They are 4x10" standard. I would like to either go with 6x9's or possibly a 6.5".

Is anyone familiar with converting something like that? Or possibly building an enclosure in the trunk for the speakers (while keeping room in the center of the enclosure for two 12's in the future).

I am pretty new to car audio. So I'm not looking to rewire my car just yet, therefore I need speakers that will simply plug into the old wiring. Im leaning on an Alpine system, for the most part.

why dont you replace your stock 10" mid speakers and go with something better, and dont go through the trouble to put 6*9'z or 6.5" because you will have to redo your back dash, also if you were thinking about making a enclosure to fit your subwoofer and your midrange speakers, i would say tht is not recomended, because your subwoofer box is built separately for your bass to perform.

if your replacing the speakers u will still have to do minor rewiring, you cannot simply plug a factory speaker molex into after stock you will need to do some cutting...idealy you would want a round speaker as apposed to the 4x10 , round speaker most often then not will give a better sound, however i have heard the 4x10s replaced in said car and they dont sound half bad for what you get...

I am thinking about pulling out my rear seat, and placing the subs in there, and then mounting the seat again. Not sure yet, have to do some more research.

For now, I think Ill just look for a 4x10 to 6x9 adapter.
I may just end up rewiring everything and doing it right the first time.

Anyone have ideas on how to remove the screws in the front speakers? the screw is about 3/4" from my windshield. No idea how Im going to get a screwdriver in there, unless I replace my windshield!

^^vice grips and small screw driver bits(the kind you use for multi point screwdrivers etc...). As for your 4x10's, a good quality 4x6 plate type speaker may sound more than good enough and prevent you from hacking up your rear deck. I would concentrate more on trying to fit good components up front, and a nice sub(s) in the back.

The rear speakers are the least important speakers. Fire a respectable 4x10" speaker in the back (Eclipse makes a great one) and call it a day back there. If you really want to get better sound, throw all the $$$$ you can at the front speakers and get a set of component speakers into the front somehow. You can start with a good basic 3.5" up front and go from there until the $$$ grows to allow the custom work for good component speakers up front.

You can’t argue with that...That’s exactly what you want to do. A rookie mistake in car audio is to spend all your money on 6x9's in the rear and neglect the front. Spend all your money up front where your ears are pointing (and on subs).

for the 3 1/2 speakers canadian tire sells something like the small screw driver bits with a rachit that will let you get into places like that and makes it fast

^ yep. And it's cheap too, retailing under $20.

A ScewDriver is a better tool but about 3-4x the price.

Your doors will hold a 5.25" relatively easily and with a buildout you can do more. The kickpanels in that car are pretty decent too sizewise should you want to go that route.

I did a 87 Buick GN a while back.... and this is what i've done in the rear.

Custom plate for dual (ADS 320i) 5.25" mids & dual 1" tweeters, and also a whole new rear shelf.



And for the subs..... i put in two 15" EV subs in a 2pcs custom ported enclosure.
