A sales guy at Future shop told me that typically 4 channel amps are designed for full-range/high frequency reporduction. He said it is possible to run subs off of them but since they are designed for High freq. they overheat quickly . . .

I want a stereo amp to run my front stage, and a mono amp to run my sub (4ohm). I thought the perfect way to do this was with a 4 channel amp. -> ch 1+2 running left and right Front stage, and ch 3+4 bridged to run the sub. But according to FS guy, this will over heat the amp too quickly, and I would be better off to get two individual amps, one for the Front stage, and one for the subs.

Personally, I think this is [img]graemlins/bs.gif[/img] Because I have seen some SQ systems that use a single 6 channel amp to run everything in their set-up.

So is there any truth to what guy says? Is this only true for entry level equipment and not pro stuff?

It is very common to do that with a 4 channel..

you will do nothing wrong as long as 3&4 are given the proper load. [img]graemlins/thumb.gif[/img]

That's what I'm doing right now with a JL e4300. So far I'm very happy with the sound I'm getting considering it's a pretty low budget system.

And in terms of over heating. I drove 17 hours straight a couple weeks ago with music on the whole time and it got warm, but never cut out or clipped.

I have done many systems using a 4 channel amp... Kyle is exactly right... make sure channels 3&4 are seeing the right load for the amp you are using.

the problem with some shop is every now and then you will get somebody that is just starting in the industry so when you are in there ask more than one person so you kind of get a second opinion ive been installing for 17years and ive designed some system with 4 channel and if they have the proper load and proper set up they are just as good as any other amp. by the way no offence intended towards the employes of future shop its like that every where my friend is a very good installer and salesman and he works there

Thanks, I didn't think what he said was legit. I also think that he was new. He took me into the Demo room and showed me an MTX "4 channel" 100 WRMS per channel. I looked at the spec tag which was 'titled' 4 channel amp but the only power specs I found was 100 watts x 2. I looked at the whole body of the amp and only saw 2 inputs and outputs. I brought this to his attention and he told me it was a 4 channel. I then asked him where channels 3 and 4 where on the amp and he searched it high and low and said, "It has to be a 4 channel, because the Future Shop manual said it was . . . but I can't find the other channels"

So, I guess he was new and speaking from previous experience.
