MTX support is kind of strage, they, and the amplifiers manuals, state that my MTX amp can handle a maximum input signal of 8 Vrms. A few months ago I bought a 6-Channel Line Driver for all 3 of my amplifiers. Right now I don't have the output gains turned all the way up, but I kind of want to, because that's why I bought the darn thing, to get my 8 volts RMS.

When I talk to MTX support, they say YES you can, but it's "safer" to run them at 5 volts RMS. This kind of makes me mad, because they say it can do one thing, but basically not to do it????!!
That really makes sense...

So I'm posting here to see what input voltage all of you fellow MTX Amplifier owners are running, and if you think it's completely fine to do 8 Vrms.

What MTX is telling you is, yes the amps can do it, BUT there are alot of dumb people (not saying you are) that will see a 8 volts line driver, 8 volts input.............crank it up !!!...............and poof...............

Even though you have 8 volts there.......you need to make sure your deck is putting out a clean signal too...........you crank a distorted signal up and ram it thru 8volts...............poof............you'll let the hidden smoke out !

I'm confused as to what you are saying? The deck I have is this one:

It's a Sony CD/MP3 player that puts out 4 volts through it's 3 sets of pre-outs. From there, it plugs into my 6-Channel Phoenix Gold 8 Volt RMS Line Driver, which from there, goes into each of my 3 MTX Amplifiers.

I have the GAINS on the Amplifiers turned ALL the way off, so I am not even using any of the amplifiers pre-amps. Since they can handle a maximum of 8 volts, and my Line Driver puts out 8 volts, it only makes sense to have them all off.

I'm confused as to how any of this could cause something to "poof"??

MTX loves 5vrms, but will take 8 no prob. Do like Tim says, and carefully adjust all of your gains. If it sounds great, who cares what the numbers are.

Amplifiers have something called a GAIN setting. This is matched to the input voltage it is receiving from either the deck or line driver etc. Since MTX takes 8 volts max, and my line driver is 8 volts RMS, I know I can turn the GAIN all the way down(to 8 volts) and use none of the amplifiers pre-amps, therefore getting a better signal-to-noise ratio.

 

What I am saying is, that if your deck put out distortion at higher level........your sending distortion into the line driver........which is increasing that distortion to the amp..........

Basically, you need to find out at what point the deck starts to clip (volume level) then watch how much you go above that point.............

ummm.......easy analogy.................4 banger motor..........does a certain speed at a certain RPM.............abuse that RPM point and the motor can blow up...........add NOS to it.........the motor will go faster now...........but now that RPM is even more dangerous when abused..............make sense ?
