how to get started as an installer?

Yep it would be wise to go to Mobile Dynamics,to get you paper.
It is a little pricesy and that's why im not going just yet. It's 3G's for the basic 4 week program and 6G's for the 8 week course that shows you how to do custom work etc.
Im going on Wensday to take a tour of the place to see what it's like.

-In terms of an employer, are there any additional insurance issues / requirements the shop owner would face in this industry?
Not only do you have an employee on your property that "could get hurt", but what about the fact that someone brings their automobile onto your property(for an install of sorts) that could leave damaged or worst, they get into an accident leaving your shop and say it's directly related to "that new kid that worked on the car"
-What sort of insurance does the owner require to begin with for protection?
-How would this certification benefit the shop owner other than stating they (the new employee) does meet a minimum standard? Does this aid in the owner’s insurance policy in anyway?

i personally would't recomend mobile dynamics
the mecp certificate is great but is not required to do car audio and alarms
if you want to do remote starters you need to be an automotive electronics accessory technician
and that course is at some provincial collages
in my opion mobile dynamics is way to much money for what you get
i've had installers take the course and they all think it was a waste after doing hands on
i think stores would be happier to take you in and teach you as aposed to having a derik lee swollen head

If it wasn't for "that swollen head" car audio installations would probably not be where it is today, and do you know that Derek Lee is partly responsible for the MECP ?
To some who took the course, and didn't pay attention, or had different expectations I can understand their negative opinion, however it's a great stsrt for someone who is not sure about their capabilities.
The course is fast paced, because most people ought to remember simple formulae that they took in high school, and hopefully graduated.

I was planning to attend Mobile Dynamics in fall, but then I had people in all 3 shops I visited tell me it was a waste of money.. now, I can't say that it's a terrible course or anything, since I don't know, but 1 installer who had taken it and told me not to bother, plus 2 other shop managers who told me they don't really care about it all that much, does have an effect on my opinion.
I think what I'll do is try to get MECP basic and automotive electronics accessory technician on my own, and go from there trying to get a shop to take me on, to learn the hands-on part. Too bad Ottawa has close to zero business in the way of big custom work, which is what really interests me... I think I'll have to move.
EDIT: oh yeah, also meant to say this: Thanks for all the input and opinions, it really is a big help to someone who doesn't really know yet.
