well if i got rid of my car i'll have a pair of alpine type r 10" subs and a pair of Blaupunkt 6x9's and an Alpine mp3 deck to work with Doug.
If I had a receiver would that eliminate the amps or what exactly would it eliminate?

Well u would still want an external amp to run ur Apline subs.. Then if you did have a receiver use that for ur normal speakers and use the Sub Line on the reciever to send the signal to the amp, then use a battery charger/ac/cd converter to run the amp. Or use ur deck as the main thing and hook it up as if it wher in a car same idea.

If I were you and wanted cheap power for a sub...
Scam up an old reciever... bigger the better... preferably 2ch that can run 2 8ohm loads a side... (4ohm stable)
run 1 4ohm coil per side... you should be able to find something that will deliver at least 100Wrms or even upwords of 600wrms... check out flea markets, pawn shops ect..
My dad finds massive old school recievers at yard sales for under $20-30 all the time...
Anyway.. if you don't have an EQ you can just put trebble all the way down and bass all the way up... but for best results you should build a passive (pretty cheap) or find an active at a prosound shop or something on ebay.. ect..
If your only goal is to bug the chit out of your neighbour.. I'd just wait till 4AM and kick his Fing door in... maybe **** right infront of his door too.. use a piece of plastic so it flows under the door inside his room...

Actually Haunz its chickz next door (fat and ugly) and I've already got the idea to put ky jelly all over their door handle lol And I dunno its a mix between making a stereo of my own with car audio parts vs just buyin a good stereo cuz apparently stereo's can get wayup there. But having the option to have it work with my tv and or computer would be cool.
The guy down the hall from me made a stereo out of a deck and 4 clarion 5 1/4 speakers. 2 of the 4 are in their own box and the other 2 are in the same box as the deck is attached to. It sounds awesome and was well done.

You can get it to sound mint no doubt about it, specially if you have decent stuff and it installed right to spec. I have my Kicker K65.2 Components I use as front speakers there just in a so so box for now, but Kicker sent me specs ont he size of box to use it in, the port size/lengh and wood thickeness and would be tuned to like 46.5hz or something like that and they sound nice in a so so box. You would just need a decent AC/DC converter but ur gonna spend over 100$ just for that, or battery and a charger which the battery you don't want inside due to gases/fumes they give off while being in use/charging.

I mean for the rig up you want I wouldn't exactly worry about 6*9's or 5 1/4's etc etc...your gonna do that just buy real speakers. Make sure ur apartment has concreate walls cause ur party room will be shut down quick lol.
