HighEnd Sound, No Subs OK? which HU?
#22
The reason is simple, the source material and how it is recorded changes and so does the enviroment. For example, road noise at 100km/h, traffic in the city, rain, windows up or down. To better understand the source material issue have a look at one of the other threads started in the general SQ section entiled attn: cd buyers - clipping hell. No source material is recorded equal.

Some OEM units might have some decent specs but many are sonic turds.
But Dowgsbreakfast and Haunz have a point, your $1k budget is pretty limited for your goals. A compromise may be in order. Most of us SQ wackos never actually finish our SQ setups... why not plan your upgrade path to cover a couple years. This will conserve funds and you can do a significant upgrade every 4 months or so (it will give you time to shop around so you will know what YOU think is the best). This will also give you the time to save up the $ to get better stuff and a better install too! Check out the sales stores have on ‘last years models’, I am not afraid to save money!
Be serious about SQ and be patient!
If you can find the Rockford 8250... it was a deal at $1000 and a steal at ~$250

kind of funny how things go in a circle...we started with mono went to stereo then to quadrophonic( I think this was a ford car stereo term for 4 speakers) now we have dvds with 5.1 channels and even home audio with 7.1 channels...and VM wants a stereo set up. WHAT WAS ONCE OLD IS NOW NEW AGAIN!

I like your idea VM.
As a music enthusiast I would keep your system as simple as possible, good speaker locations, a good HU and some well placed x-over points will sound great, you don't need to go crazy and process the hell out of your sound because that's not what music is about.
I'm a big fan of Focal, have been for a few years now, I think, if it's in your budget, definatly go with the 165W, the Utopia set is one of the best sets of speakers out there, and with a clean amp and great HU, you'll be more than happy.
You say you don't want to run a sub if possible, I would suggest running a pair of Focal 5WS in your doors if that's the case, off a 4 channel amp. Despite what some people think or say, the 5WS has TONS of output and works great in doors, they would provide MORE than enough bass for what you want. Could run them well below 50Hz and they still sound great.
I also second the 8250 suggestion, it's an excellent deck...I love mine.
