A constant variable pot has a huge range. A pot that has 12 clicks has twelve choices. So you get the disadvantages of the Pot (gets dirty, wears, etc.) with the disadvantages of the SIP (only a limited amount of frequencies to chose from).

I don't think JL's pots would qualify as bad, though, especially if you set them with care. Referencing the chart in the back of the book, you can set your crossover within 3Hz or so if you do it with care... I believe that an unlabelled pot like on a Rockford or Sony would be a "bad pot" and one a "clicky" one on a JL or Titanium would be a good one, the best of both worlds - the adjustability of a pot with the accuracy of a SIP. If I'm wrong, then I stand corrected, but that's the way I am seeing things...

Not saying that the pots that JL uses or anyone else for that matter are crap, over a period of time ALL pots will have issues.......they get dirty, lose, over time the small amount of grease inside a pot can try out, dust can create a barrier inside the pot and make it lose contact.

The Alpine 7909 is one of the best decks EVER made, yet it's one HUGE downfall is the volume control is a manual volume pot. Find a worn out manual volume control and you will here it scratching thru your system, makes pops and can even go so far as to spike the system.

SIPs or any form of a chip crossover, EQ, Balanced Adaptor are always going to be supierior to a moving part.

Almost all crossover chips can be made, they are just resistors.

Even the Xtants...................

I used to have a Xtant SIP kit that I got when I was a dealer, had so many options in it. I sold it on ebay for $300 US. You don't need that many options to tune a system properly......

LKEt's say it wthis way: all factors equal, I would take the Eclipse over thre Xtant just because of personal perference
but as a generalization, I would take a brand new NIB amp over a patched up, used amp unless there is a huge gap in quality
crossove or notwt doesn't really matter becuase rreflecting on the matte rwhile drinking made me raelize that you only really need 80 hz, 100 hz and 135 hz crossover freqs anyway but the opti0on of 12db/oct and 24db/oct is always good and is probably far more important then the actual frequencies you can select fomr.

^were you like pounding a 40 while typing? The first half is perfectly coherent, the 2nd half is well, less than.

I agree...I normally shy away from used amps in general, but ESPECIALLY if they have ever been blown up.
