Car Alarm
#1
Well, someone tried to break into my car two nights ago My door handles are all messed up and they bent up the doors trying to pry the handles off. Luckily someone was in the area and walked over because he heard a comotion so they didn't get in.
Now I'm thinking it's time for an alarm. They problem is that I am really broke. I was wondering if anyone knew of a decent alarm for really cheap. I am fine buying from ebay and have looked at a few but really don't know anything about them.
I would like to instal it myself because I can't afford to pay someone to do it. Do you think it's hard to do? I put my own stereo in without problems so I figure an alarm can't be that much more difficult.
I want something that will go off if they are prying at my car, so I think what I'd need is a shock sensor. Also I would want it to go off if they doors opened.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks all,
Craig G

You can get alarms for as little as $160 installed. I think that would be a better option for you. I don't recomend just jumping in and doing an alarm if you have never learned from someone experienced in them. They are nothing like installing a car stereo. With a car stereo so many things can be done wrong and no one may never notice, bad grounds might introduce a little noise and wrong polarity and the speaker will still work and some people won't notice etc. With an alarm you will get major annoyances like falsing all the time, bad range, and worst of all it won't protect the car which is the reason for getting it in the first place. I would go to a shop that you trust and ask for a basic alarm, you can get brand names such as Viper, Avital etc. for around $199 installed, which is dirt cheap for protecting one of the most exopensive assets most people will ever own.

I just talked to a friend that works at a caraudio shop. He can get me a basic alarm for 99 bucks but it cost 100 to install. Lifetime warantee but I don't know what brand it is or whatever. (Forgot to ask)
Also, he might be able to get me the upgraded one for the same price, he is goign to ask, but he isn't the owner so he can't just do it.
The lower line alarm has a single stage shock sensor. The better one has a two stage shock sensor and proximity sensor.
I figure it will be 250 after tax and install is all done. I might just do it even though I don't have the money. I figure the interst on my Visa will be WAY less than the cost of a new system.

Do yourself a favor and buy yourself a paging car alarm, this way when the little bastard is trying to get into your car, you will at least know about it. Try one like the Astra A777 available at FS for a decent price.

Don't skimp on the install, check around and find someone that is good, to many alarms are installed by HACKS and the alarm isn't worth a $hit.................
A good installer can make a $69 alarm work great and a HACK can make a $999 alarm work like a bag of doggy poo poo..................and it will probably be flaming as well.............
Unless you can do it yourself you get what you pay for......................

So I'd guess that paying 100 bucks from an authorized dealer is a good idea for instal alone?
I think I'm going to do it if I can get ahold of the place tonight or tomorrow I'll have it in tomorrow afternoon

I say do yourself a favor and ****ing spend some time learning how to do your own alarm install. I don’t think there is a shop out there that can install an alarm worth a damn. Check out www.the12volt.com and read up. Figure out what exactly you want in an alarm and learn how to do each part. Ask lots of questions and you will be fine.
You can get wiring diagrams for your car and your alarm from there. It’s not easy the first time but its worth it. I think you will find if you don’t know how to do something, eventually someone will give you a diagram of exactly how to do it.
Give yourself a lot of time and don't rush. Do a lot of checking.
Something’s no alarm install should be without are:
-Re-routed hood release.
-Hidden brain and antenna.
-A lot of different colored wires or same colored wires, which ever you think is better. Of course the wire colors need to be different than the standard colors. Another words, make the red wire (typically power) be used for some function that wont matter if it is cut.
-Try and hide all the wires, relays, etc.
.. im sure you can think of some more. Don’t want to give away 2 much.
Anyways, I don’t think there is a shop out there that would install my alarm how I did it for less than $500.
Hell the reason I don’t want to sell me car is I don’t want to have to reinstall my alarm to my specifications again, its just so much work.

You know what, that is great advice! In fact you could use it in so many applications Your appendix just burst? No prob, read up on it and remove it yourself. Tree fall on a powerline, no need to call the utilities, get out your strippers and fix that baby. 4 alarm fire in the kitchen raging uncontrolled? No sweat, save yourself the hassle of calling 911 and just turn on the tap and throw glassesof water at it!
