I have had 5 VWs and most recently a 1999 Golf, 2000 Golf new body style and a 2004 TDI.....

All cars have been incredibley reliable. My 2000 Golf had 185000 K when I got rid of it and all I had to do for maintenance was oil changes & brakes and a set of front struts...Those roads in Saskatchewan are terrible.

I do know the late 80's early 90's VWs had a few more issues.

I also read that the new Toureg is a POS. The cars are great!

I just bought a new car and was looking at the 05 VW models. I heard nothing but negative things about VW in terms of reliability of both the TDI and 1.8T. When I asked the sales manager about it he hesitated and answered well things have been OK but thats what warranty if for

I know at least 5 reps that currently have either Jettas or Passats and these guys including myself put on 30K to 50K per year.

Most of these guys are multi time VW owners and swear by them for reliability and value.

The current 2004 Jetta, Golf and Passat platforms are near the end of their life but are great German designed cars.

As for a salesman that slags his own product, I bet he is consistantly bringing home a small paycheck and if his boss found out he would probably be jobless.

jettas are nice, the accord v6 is very sexy though. my father just picked one up and i'm not a big honda fan but it made me reconsider it. also if you are lookin in that platform the acura tsx is basically the same car except it has the euro front end, sport seats with more bolstering, 3 spoke steering wheel and standard tiptronic. its the 4cyl vtec but they go like hell, put an injen cold air intake in a friends tsx and wow. sounded a little more gruff when you first started it and it was ok for town driving but when you got on the highway and opened it up it was growling like a hungry v8. kinda dig that lil car.

As a sales rep that obviously does a lot of driving.. you'd be nuts if you didn't take the TDI Jetta.

Be sure to check out vwvortex for all of your VW info.

(imho the best car site on the web.. period!)

Meh, get a big truck and see all the things in the world that you miss from way down low. Then you can choose to drive on the little honda or VW that just cut you off and flipped you the bird. Nothing quite like parking you rpush bar on the back bumper of said honda and watching the driver squirm.
