Hardware apparently makes no difference. Here is a post from someone on another website:

I just ordered the s50 from ebay today and I live in canada. I just phoned sirius canada and asked them if I can activate it still on my present account and she said yes she also said that I can activate it with sirius canada or with my present usa acount so at a latter time I can switch to canada when and if stern does. no need to buy new stuff.

^ That is the same as XM as far as the Pioneer ones are concerned as well. There's no difference in hardware, only who you decide to activate it with.
